World Literature and Local Cosmopolitanism

최근 들어 코즈모폴리터니즘에 대한 새로운 해석들이 본격적으로 제기되고 있다. 이런 해석들을 세계문학에 적용할 경우, 세계문학의 이론적 발전을 이룰 중요한 성찰을 얻을 수 있을 것 같다. 기존의 세계문학론과 코즈모폴리터니즘 모두 유사한 문제점과 한계에 봉착해 있다. 기존세계문학론에서 로컬 대 글로벌, 지역문학 대 세계문학, 주변부 문학 대중심부 문학의 이분법과 그 이분법의 전제가 되는 서구중심주의가 암묵적으로 전제되어있다면, 기존 코즈모폴리터니즘에서도 로컬과 글로벌,민족과 세계, 시골과 도시 간의 이분법이 강력하게 작용해왔다. 세계문학과 코즈모폴리터니즘에 대한 새로운 이해와 정의를 위해서는 이런 전제들에 대한 비판을 시도할 필요가 있다. 최근에 등장하는 새로운 코즈모폴리터니즘들은 초국적인 것, 초민족적인 것, 초월적인 것, 엘리트적인 것, 보편주의적인 것을 지향하는 위로부터의 코즈모폴리터니즘에 맞서 로컬적인 것, 토착적인 것, 소수적인 것, 특수한 것을 강조하는 아래로부터의 코즈모폴리터니즘을 지지한다. 이러한 코스모폴리터니즘은기존의 세계문학론과 달리 지역문학이나 민족문학을 세계문학으로 인식하는 데 유용한 시각을 제공해 줄 수 있다. 이 글은 세계문학의 입장에서 민족문학이나 지역문학을 보는 것이 아니라 민족문학과 지역문학의입장에서 세계문학의 가능성을 생각하고자 한다.

Recently, various interpretations of cosmopolitanism have been raised. If these interpretationsare applied to the discussion of world literature, it is likely that we will be able togain insightful reflection on the theoretical advance of world literature. Both the existingworld literature theory and the existing cosmopolitanism face similar problems andlimitations. Like the existing world literature theory, in which the dichotomy between the localand the global, national literature and world literature, peripheral literature and central literatureis implicitly premised, the dichotomy between the local and the global, the nationaland the cosmopolitan, the rural and the urban has strongly influenced on the existingcosmopolitanism. For a new understanding and definition of world literature and cosmopolitanism,it is necessary to try to criticize these premises. New emerging cosmopolitanism supportscosmopolitanism from below, which is local, indigenous, minor, and particular, againstcosmopolitanism from above, which is oriented toward transnational, transcendent, elitist,universalistic culture. The new cosmopolitanism can provide a useful perspective for recognizinglocal literature or national literature as world literature. This article is not about seeing nationalliterature or local literature from the perspective of world literature, but seeing the possibilityof world literature from the perspective of national and local literature.
