Luther’s Reform and Theology of Preaching: Focusing on his Sermons on John 20:19-23

This paper inquires into Luther’s reform and theology of preaching by examining his sermons on John 20:19–23, which he preached from 1522 to 1544. Luther refers to this text as teaching on the preaching office. In particular, he mentions that “Just as the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you” (John 20:21) appears only in the Gospel of John and that Christ provides the definition of the preaching office with these words. The definition relates to “one should preach the Gospel of Christ and forgive the sins of the crushed, fearful consciences, but retain those of the impenitent and secure, and bind them.” Based on this definition, Luther points out some problems of the sermons from the medieval Roman Catholic Church and presents his Protestant theology of preaching. In this theology, Luther emphasizes Christ’s establishment of the spiritual kingdom, namely, the kingdom of the remission of sins and employs law-gospel and faith-love as key themes.
