본고에서는 ‘꾀쟁이 하인’ 설화의 동화화 양상과 의미, 문학교육적 함의(含意)를 고찰했다. ‘꾀쟁이 하인’ 이야기는 1926년 『조선동화대집』에 <외쪽의 꾀>라는 제목의 동화로 처음 출판된 이래, 현재까지 그 명맥이 이어지고 있었다. 1940년대 <자글대 이야기>, 1950년대 <꾀쟁이 외쪽이>, 1970년대 <꾀많은 머슴>, 1980년대 <꾀돌이 외쪽이>, <꾀 많은 종>, <그 양반에 그 하인>, 1990년대 이후 <왕굴장굴대>, <꾀보 막동이>, <왕굴장굴대>, <빤짝빤짝 꾀돌이 막둥이> 등이 ‘꾀쟁이 하인’ 설화를 동화로 나타낸 작품이었다. 이들 작품은 모두 다음의 구조를 공통적으로 지니면서, 부분적 변용이 드러나는 형태였다. Ⅰ. 주인이 하인을 학대하다. Ⅱ. 하인이 주인을 속이다. Ⅲ. 주인이 하인을 죽이려고 하다. Ⅳ. 하인이 죽을 위기를 벗어나다. Ⅴ. 하인이 주인을 죽이고, 주인의 딸과 결혼하다. ‘꾀쟁이 하인’을 동화화한 작품들은 이러한 구조를 지니면서, 후대로 올수록 ‘지략담의 고착화, 주인공의 선인화(善人化), 상호 수긍의 결말화’ 등이 강화되는 특징이 있었다. 그 이유는 작가와 시대 상황의 영향, 선명한 선악 대결의 제시, 행복한 결말을 위한 동화적 장치 등이었다. 이러한 ‘지략담의 고착화, 주인공의 선인화(善人化), 상호 수긍의 결말화’라는 동화화 양상에서 나타난 특징이 문학교육에 함의하는 점은, ‘풍자’라는 미적범주를 교육내용ㆍ학습목표 등으로 설정할 수 있다는 것, 윤리적ㆍ도덕적 가치에 대한 접근을 다양하게 시도할 수 있다는 것, 문학과 현실의 진실성에 대한 다양한 접근을 시도할 수 있다는 것 등이었다. 이러한 문학교육적 함의는 궁극적으로 眞善美의 가치를 추구하는 것으로 볼 수 있었다.
This study consider that an aspects of fairy tale making about ‘tricky servant’ story and literary educational implications. ‘Tricky servant’ story has kept its existence since it was published as the title of <Oezzok’s tricks> from 『Joseon Donghwa Daegip』 in 1926. ‘Tricky servant’ story is presented as fairy tale in several works: <Jageuldae story> in 1940’s; <Tricky Oezzok> in 1950’s; <Tricky farmhand> in 1970’s; <Tricky Oezzok> in 1980’s; <WangoolJanggooldae>, <twinkle twinkle tricky the youngest> after 1990’s. These works have following structures in common with style showing partial transformation. Ⅰ. A master abuses a servant. Ⅱ. A servant deceives a master. Ⅲ. A master wants to kill a servant. Ⅳ. A servant passes the crisis of death. Ⅴ. A servant kills a master, and get married to master’s daughter. Works that transformed ‘tricky servant’ into fairy tale have these structures and characteristics intensifying fixedness of cleverness story, good man making of protagonists, ending of mutual affirmation and so on over time. In this sense, there are literary educational implications like setup of aesthetic category, approach of moral value and approach of truth literature, reality and, etc. It means seeking to value of truth, goodness, and beauty ultimately.
