1945년 8월 해방을 맞이한 불교계는 새로운 시작을 준비하는 움직임이 발 빠르게 진행되고 있었다. 교단에서는 가야총림의 결성을 기반으로 흩어져 있던 스님들의 결속과 의지를 다지며 한국불교의 수행가풍을 정립하여 정체성을 찾아가려는 움직임이 일어나고 있었다. 당시 교단의 교정을 맡고 있던 만암 종헌은 백양사에서 호남고불총림을 결성해서 호남불교의 정화와 수행가풍 진작에 노력하고 있었으며, 같은 시기 퇴옹 성철을 주축으로 이루어진 봉암사 결사는 철저한 수행을 통해 한국불교의 정체성을 확립하는 중요한 기반을 다지고 있었다. 본 논문에서는 해방공간기에 펼쳐진 가야총림과 봉암사 결사, 그리고 고불총림 결사를 통해 결사가 주는 의미를 찾고자 하였다. 그 가운데 특히 봉암사 결사와 호남고불총림 결사의 비교를 통해 다음과 같은 특징들을 도출하였다. 봉암사 결사는 선율병운을 통한 돈오적 결사라고 보았으며 호남고불총림 결사는 정혜쌍수를 통한 점수적 결사라고 보았다. 또한 역대 선승들이 보여주었던 선농일치를 통한 깨어있고 살아 움직이는 결사였음을 알 수 있었다. 특히 두 결사 모두가 계율에 기반한 결사를 펼쳤는데 이것은 계율이 가볍게 여겨지고 있는 현대 한국불교에 주는 의미와 과제라고 본다.
The movement to prepare for a new beginning was rapidly progressing in the Buddhist world that reached liberation in 1945. The first work to do was to establish a Korean Buddhist practice tradition. The problem of married monks in the Purification Movement, was of course, an unacceptable part. It can be said to be a cleansing movement from outside. The aspect of the practice purification, which is the purifying from within, was to establish identity of the Buddhist monks by establishing the practice tradition of Korean Buddhism and strengthening the solidarity and will of scattered monks. In addition, in the process of forming Gaya Chongnim and Association Movements, Bongamsa Association Movement led by the monk Seongcheol, was an important association to establish the identity of Korean Buddhism. In this paper, I briefly reviewed the formation of Gaya Chongnim, Bongamsa Association Movement and Gobul Chongnim Association Movement during the liberation period. Among them, the following characteristics were derived by comparing Bongamsa Association Movement and Gobul Chongnim Association Movement. The Bongamsa Association Movement was considered to be the sudden enlightenment and sudden practice(donodonsu) through the harmony of seon and vinaya also Gobul Chongnim Association Movement was egarded as the sudden enlightenment and gradual practice (donojeomsu) through tranquility and insight practice together. Unfortunately, both Association Movements did not last as the war broke, but the spirit of the Association Movements is now still influential in a good way.
