우리가 일상생활에서 가장 자주 그리고 가깝게 접할 수 있는 인공지능으로 자동차의 내비게이션을예로 들 수 있다. 내비게이션의 현재 기능을 보면 불과 수년 전에는 예상하기 어려웠던 것이 많이 있다. 이처럼 최근 우리 사회의 거의 모든 분야에 영향을 주고 있는 인공지능의 발전 속도는 놀라울 정도이다. 본 논문에서는 인공지능의 발전과 인공지능이 영어교육에 끼치는 영향에 대해 알아보기 위해알파고(AlphaGo)와 파파고(Papago)를 중심으로 논의하고자 한다. 알파고는 2016년 프로기사를 대표하는 이세돌 9단에게 승리함으로써 바둑계뿐만 아니라 일반인들에게도 인공지능의 대명사라고 할정도로 널리 알려지게 되었다. 바둑의 어려움과 심오함을 감안하면, 등장한 지 불과 3년 이내에 인간대표에게 승리를 거둔 알파고의 능력에 놀라움을 넘어 두려움을 느낄 정도이다. 알파고의 더욱 놀라운점은 자체적인 학습 능력을 갖추고 있어서 수천 년 역사에서 인간이 두지 않은 수를 창의성 있게 둘수 있다는 점이다. 번역 인공지능인 파파고 또한 최근에 발전을 계속하고 있다. 아직까지는 번역 대상언어 간의 문화적 차이와 관용적 용법 등을 번역하는 데 있어서는 한계점이 분명하지만, 어휘가 아무리 어렵고 문장 구조가 아무리 복잡해도 사실적 글을 번역하는 속도와 정확도는 매우 우수하다. 최근에 발전을 거듭하고 있는 챗봇(chatbot)과 함께, 번역기는 우리나라의 영어교육 환경에서 효과성이 지속적으로 입증되고 있다. 이에 따라 영어교육의 대표적인 목표가 의사소통능력의 향상이라는 사실에도점차적인 변화가 일어나고 있다. 예를 들어, 번역기의 결과물을 자신의 상황에 맞게 수정할 수 있는 능력이 더욱 요구되고 있다. 또한 영어 자체에 대한 구사력과 테크놀로지를 활용할 수 있는 능력도 필수역량으로 부각되고 있다. 인공지능 시대의 영어교육 환경은 더욱 빠르게 변화하고 있으며, 이러한 변화는 교사에게는 교과 내용에 대한 지식뿐만 아니라 테크놀로지 활용에 대한 지식도 요구하고 있다.
We are now so closely related to numerous examples of AI (artificial intelligence) in our daily lives,one of which is a car navigation. Some of the new functions of the car navigation are very smart,giving a lot of convenience to our lives. Including these smart navigations, AI has recently madesurprisingly rapid developments in almost all areas. In the current paper, the relationships betweenthe development of AI and English education are discussed with special reference to AlphaGo andPapago. By winning the baduk match against then human champion in 2016, AlphaGo made itselfvery famous and has become almost synonymous with AI. Considering the complexity and profundityof thought to play baduk well, most professional players were not only surprised but also terrified byAlphaGo's ability to beat the human champion so easily. What was more surprising was that AlphaGocould creatively make a novel move, which had never been played by humans for thousands of years. AlphaGo not only learned from human players but also learned from itself. Papago, an AI translationprogram, has also continuously made developments. Although it has limitations such as translation ofculturally related expressions, Papago has a clear advantage in translating sentences with difficultvocabulary and complex structure. Together with chatbots that have also made a lot ofdevelopments, translation programs like Papago have shown their efficacy in English education. Dueto this trend led by AI, the fundamental goal of English education, that is, to improve communicativecompetence, will eventually change. In the era of AI, one of the prerequisite capacities for Englishteachers as well as students will be the ability to take advantage of new technologies in addition tohigh proficiency in English.
