본고는 서얼의 문무과 과거시험 허용 및 요직 진출을 위해 상소문을 통해 이를 공론화했던 최명길과 그의 손자 최석정의 대를 이은 노력을 살펴보았다. 이 과정에서 서얼 금고와 서얼 허통의 역사적 전개 과정을 간략히 요약하는 가운데, 최명길이 공론화했던 서얼의 요직 진출 논의가 비단 손자인 최석정뿐 아니라, 후대의 관료 및 서얼 지식인들 사이에서도 지속적으로 공유, 확산되며 서얼의 청요직 진출에 실천적 교두보 역할을 했음을 확인할 수 있었다. 명망 있는 가문의 자손으로 태어나 어찌 보면 자신과 무관할 수도 있는 서얼들의 아픈 처지에 공감하며, 시종 공정함을 잃지 않는 자세와 인륜과 천리라는 보편적 관점에서 서얼들의 문제에 접근해 서얼들에게 부당하게 행해지는 차별을 실천적으로 해결하고자 했던 두 사람이야말로 오늘날에도 귀감이 될 만한 지식인의 역할을 수행했다고 하겠다. 최명길·최석정에 대한 연구는 그동안 척화-주화의 대립 및 노·소 대립과 관련된 정치적 측면의 연구에 다소 치우쳐 왔는데, 본고를 통해 서얼들이 당하는 부당한 차별을 개선하기 위해 노력했던 두 사람의 세대를 넘은 진지한 노력과 열정이 재조명되었기를 희망한다.
This paper is a review of the efforts of Choi Myeong-kil 崔鳴吉 and his grandson Choi Seok-jung 崔錫鼎, who had been making public their opinions through Appeal for king in order to allow Sool(庶孼: son of a concubine) to take on the selective examination for civilian and military officials and to enter key posts. In the process, while summarizing the historical development process of the Discriminations against Sool and the Abrogation of that, it was confirmed that the discussion of Sool’s entry into key posts, which was discussed by Choi Myung-gil, was continuously shared and spread not only among his grandson Choi Seok-jeong, but also among the later generation bureaucrats and Sool intellectuals, and served as a practical bridgehead for Sool’s entering key posts. Born as a descendant of a prestigious family, they sympathized with the painful situation of Sool who might have nothing to do with themselves, and approached the problems of Sool from the perspective of universal human equality, and tried to solve the discrimination of Sool. So it is said that the two played the role of intellectuals who could still serve as examples today. The study of the two has been somewhat biased toward the political aspects of the conflict about War and Peace on Qing 淸 and the conflict of Noron 老論 and Soron 少論. I hope that this paper will shed new light on the sincere efforts and enthusiasm of the two, who have tried to improve the unfair discrimination committed against Sool.
