The majos and the majas differentiated themselves from the others through their dress, gesture and way of life in the in the second half of the 18th century. The coming of the Bourbon house, the foreign culture and the enlightenment policy divided seriously the spanish society and provoked the reaction of the people. After the rebellion against Equilache, the spanish people started to follow the ‘majismo’ that came from the lower class and its effect spread gradually to the upper class as seen in the examples of the Duchess of Alba and the Queen María Luisa. Furthermore, the ‘majismo’ became a symbol of the identity of the spanish people in the face of the foreign culture imposed by the enlightenment government. We can see this influence in Goya's paintings including 「The naked maja」 and 「The dressed maja」.
