이 연구에서는 김명순의 소설 「탄실이와 주영이」가 연재된 조선일보의 빠진 부분을 다 찾아서 중간 결락이 없는 온전한 본으로 발굴하고 이 판본에 의거해 「탄실이와 주영이」의 텍스트와 컨텍스트를 분석했다. 또한 김명순이 「탄실이와 주영이」를 연재하기 전에 먼저 나카니시 이노스케의 소설 『너희들의 등 뒤에서』를 일부 번역하여 연재한 것도 확인했다. 김명순의 입장에서는 자신과 비교되는 권주영이란 인물의 실체를 대중적으로 알려서 자기와는 거리가 먼 인물임을 드러내는 기회로 번역을 시도했지만 이익상이 번역을 하기로 하는 바람에 중단했다. 그러고서주영이를 보여주는 것만으로는 부족하고 탄실이의 진실을 전하기 위해서는 주영이와는 다른 탄실이의 모습을 전면적으로 그려내 보이고 싶어서 「탄실이와 주영이」 을 창작했다. 또한 김명순의 아버지의 생존에 관한 연보 사항의 오류를 바로 잡으면서 집필당시 아직 살아 있는 아버지는 1910년 한일합방의 해에 죽은 것으로, 일찍이 자살한 어머니는 아직 살아 있는 것으로 허구화시켰음을 밝혔다. 그 이유는 김명순이 성장하면서 여성적 주체성을 가지게 되고 그런 입장에서 가부장적 횡포를 부린아버지에 대한 미움과 그런 남자들에게 희생되고서도 도덕적으로 비난 받았을 어머니에 대한 이해가 생겼기 때문으로 보았다. 또한 보완된 텍스트에 의거하여 「탄실이와 주영이」가 근대 초기 계몽기의 평양의 얼개화꾼 집안의 흥망성쇠에 관한 보고서로서 가족사연대기 소설의 면모를 가지고 있음을 밝혔다.
In this study, I found all the missing parts of the Chosun Ilbo, where Kim Myung-soon's novel “Tan-sil and Joo-young” was serialized. Based on this edition, I explored the context of “Tan-sil and Joo-young.” It has also been confirmed that after Kim Myung-soon translated and serialized part of Nakanishi Inosuke's novel Behind You, serialized “Tan-sil and Joo-young.” From Kim's point of view, she translated Nakanishi's novel as an opportunity to publicize the true nature of Kwon Joo-young's character. Through translation, Kim wanted to show that Kwon Joo-young is completely different from herself. If so, it is not enough to show only Joo-young's appearance, and in order to convey the truth of Tan-sil, Kim wanted to draw the whole picture of Tan-sil, which is different from Joo-young. Kim's mother committed suicide when she was young, and father survived in 1924. Nevertheless, in “Tan-shil and Joo-young”, Tan-shil's father died in 1910 and Tan-shil's mother is described as alive. The reason why the autobiographical novel describes it differently from the actual facts is that as Kim Myung-soon grew up, she gained an identity as a woman. This is because she hated her patriarchal and tyrannical father, while she gained a good understanding of her mother, who was morally condemned and believed to have committed suicide. As for the significance of this work, “Tan-sil and Joo-young” is always mentioned only about Nakanishi novels, but in fact, it is a report on the rise and fall of Pyongyang's enlightenment during the early period of enlightenment.
