본 연구는 명확한 이유 없이 살인을 저지른 살인자의 심리를 분석한다. 분석의 대상 텍스트로서 비평적 찬사를 받은 2014년에 개봉한 영화 『폭스캐처』를 선택하였다. 아버지가 부재하는 억만장자인 존 듀폰은 자아도취적인 인물인 어머니의 사랑을 갈구하지만 사랑을 받지 못한다. 따라서 오이디푸스 단계를 정상적으로 거치지 못한 채 상징적으로 거세된 존은 남성 세계로 들어가기 위해서 자신의 권위를 세상에 드러내 보여 과시하고 싶어 한다. 그는 레슬링에 집착하면서 스포츠 영웅을 만들어 미국을 새롭게 부흥시켜야 한다고 주장한다. 하지만 그의 주장은 어머니에게 인정받지 못한 자신의 욕구를 만족시켜 줄 가장된 민족주의일 뿐이다. 그런데 그는 자신의 욕망을 충족시켜줄 대리인이 필요했고, 그 대상이 바로 마크 슐츠였다. 마크는 올림픽 금메달리스트이지만 매우 무력한 인물로 그려진다. 올림픽에서 같이 금메달을 획득한 마크의 형 데이비드 슐츠는 안정된 가정과 직장을 가지고 있는 반면에 마크는 형의 그림자에 가려져 가난하고 고독하며 외로운 삶을 살고 있는데 스스로가 더 많은 몫을 가질 자격이 있다고 생각하며 억울하고 분개하는 르상티망을 품고 있다. 이러한 마크에게 존이 제시하는 거액의 연봉과 훈련은 쉽게 수락 가능한 것이었다. 그리고 존의 어머니의 죽음으로 인해서 남성 세계로의 진입이라는 존의 환상은 실현되는 듯하였다. 하지만 마크에게 너무도 확고한 아버지의 모습을 하고 있는 데이비드로 인해서 존은 자신의 거세를 부인할 수 없었고 결국 데이비드를 살해하기에 이르렀음을 알 수 있었다.
This study analyzes the psychology of a murderer who commits murder without a clear reason. For this study, the movie Foxcatcher, which was released in 2014, which received critical acclaim, was selected. John du Pont, a billionaire without a father, has always longed for the love of his mother who has a narcissistic character, but has never received it. Therefore, John, who is symbolically castrated without going through the Oedipus stage normally, wants to show off his authority to the world to enter the male world. So, he needs an agent to satisfy his desires, and the target was Mark Schultz. Mark is an Olympic gold medalist, but he is very poor and helpless, who lives a lonely life under David, his brother's shadow. So he has ressentiment which is that they deserve more of their share so become resentful. For Mark, huge salary and training which is offered by John is easily acceptable. With the death of John's mother, John's fantasy of entering the male world seems to be realized. However, with David, who is definitely father figure to Mark, John is unable to deny his castration, and he eventually kills David.
