종교는 폭력보다도 평화와 더 연관된다고 생각하는 것이 당연한데도 실제 그런지 의문이 드는 이유는 무엇일까? 세계 역사 속에서 종교 전쟁이라는 단어가 낯설지 않으며, 지금 현 세계 공동체 안에서도 끊임없는 테러와 국가, 또는 지역 분쟁의 이면에는 종교가 어떤 형태 든 개입된 것을 보게 된다. 물론 기독교 평화주의 이론에는 어거스틴 이후 정당 전쟁론의 전통이나 마틴 루터 킹과 같은 비폭력 평화주의 이론의 계보도 있다. 그러나 실제 경험하는 세계 내 폭력 이면에 작동하는 왜곡된 종교의 상징에 대한 비판적 이론도 검토하는 것이 중요하다고 본다. 이 논문에서 필자는 세계가 직면한 다양한 종교 폭력의 사안에 대하여 기독교의 상징 개념이 어떻게 부정적으로 작동하는지 서구 영어권의 이론을 통하여 논지를 전개한다. ‘종교적 미니멀리즘과 맥시멀리즘’, ‘남성성’, ‘언약’, ‘군인-구세주’, 그리고 ‘악’과 같은 종교적 상징 개념이 어떻게 종교적 폭력과 연관이 되는지 살펴보고, 기독교가 중시하여야 할 공적 영역에서의 윤리적 책임에 대하여 대안을 살피는 것을 논문의 목적으로 하고 있다. 이를 통하여 종교 폭력의 문제를 다양한 각도에서 깊이 있게 살펴보면서, 바람직한 평화 공동체 윤리를 위한 이론적 담론을 제시할 것으로 기대한다.
How can we resolve the issue of conflicts within society? There are many tasks such as ideological conflicts between religions and inter-religious conflicts and dissensions within the religions in the religious backgrounds, issue of the rich and the poor, and the conflict between the generations. Based on this context, the author will examine the role of religion in this article. The author is interested in examining the religious influence of American Christianity towards American society, which has a longer protestant history than Korea, especially on the precedent researches of the western scholars regarding how the concept of violence emerges in relation to religion. In particular, religious minimalism and maximalism, covenant concept, the role of symbols, and the issue of evil related to religious violence will be focused on. Through this analysis, the article will attempt to establish theoretical grounds for the Korean Protestantism to overcome its negative impressions in Korean society and perform a more positive role hereafter.
