본 연구는 소매업의 시간별 영업(주간 및 야간 영업)이 범죄율 변화와 어떠한 관계를 가지는지를 연구하고자 하였다. 편의점과 슈퍼마켓은 상대적으로 접근성이 높고 판매하는 품목 또한 유사하다. 하지만, 이 둘은 영업시간의 측면에서 큰 차이를 보이는데, 주간과 야간에 동시에 영업하는 편의점에 비해, 슈퍼마켓은 주간에만 영업하고, 이러한 영업시간의 차이로 인해 범죄율이 달라질 것이라 생각하여 연구를 진행하였다. 구체적으로는, 광역 지방자치단체를 대상으로 2010년부터 2019년까지 주간에만 영업하는 슈퍼마켓의 수, 주간과 야간에 동시에 영업하는 편의점의 수와 5대 강력범죄율 통계를 수집하였다. 수집한 자료가 패널데이터라는 점을 고려하여 각 연도와 각 지방자치단체의 개별적 특성이 범죄율에 미치는 영향을 통제하고자 고정효과모형(fixed effect model)을 통한 실증 분석을 이행하였다. 분석 결과, 주간과 야간에 동시에 영업하는 편의점과 5대 강력범죄율은 양(+)의 관계, 주간에 영업하는 슈퍼마켓과 5대 강력범죄율은 음(-)의 관계를 가짐을 알 수 있었고, 이 둘의 크기는 상이함을 확인하였다. 따라서 이러한 각 소매업의 특성을 고려하여 경찰 및 지방자치단체에서는 이에 맞는 범죄 예방 방안을 마련하는 등 정책적으로도 도움이 될 것으로 본다.
This study sought to study how hourly operations (day and night operations) in retail businesses relate to changes in crime rates. Convenience stores and supermarkets are relatively accessible and the items they sell are similar. However, the two differ greatly in terms of business hours, and compared to convenience stores that operate simultaneously during the day and night, the supermarket was only open during the week, and the crime rate would change due to the difference in operating hours. Specifically, statistics on the five violent crime rates were collected for metropolitan and provincial governments from 2010 to 2019, the number of supermarkets operating only weekly and nightly, and the number of convenience stores operating simultaneously. Considering that the data collected were panel data, empirical analyses were carried out through a fixed effect model to control the impact of individual characteristics of each year and local government on crime rates. The analysis showed that convenience stores operating simultaneously during the day and night and five major violent crime rates had a positive (+) relationship, while supermarkets operating during the day had a negative (-) relationship, and the size of the two was different. Therefore, considering the characteristics of each retail business, the police and local governments are expected to be helpful in policy, such as preparing appropriate crime prevention measures.
