겸재 조태억은 조선 후기 소론계열을 대표하는 인물의 한 사람이지만, 복잡한 정치적 혼란의 중심에 놓여 있었기 때문인지 아직까지 연구자들의 시선이 그에게 미치지 못하고 있다. 하지만 그는 소론계열 학맥의 중심에 있으면서 당대 문단의 거목들에게 문학적 역량을 인정받았으며, 45권 20책의 문집을 남겼다. 이 글은 아직까지 학계에서 언급되지 않은 조태억의 서문을 대상으로 한다. 조태억의 서문은 모두 17편인데, 시문집의 서문이 9편으로 가장 많다. 이 글에서는 이 9편의 시문집 서문 중 「백석시집서」와 「석희박부자시고서」, 「노주집서」 3편을 살펴보았다. 조태억의 서문은 서사와 의론을 위주로 하는데, 이와 같은 특성은 그가 인품과 덕성을 문장의 근본으로 여기는 도덕적 문학관을 지녀 인품과 덕성을 통해 문학을 논했기 때문이다. 하지만 이런 전통적인 문학관을 지니고 있었음에도 불구하고 「노주집서」와 「석희박부자시고서」를 보면 조태억이 서문의 서술을 위해 단락간의 관계를 치밀하게 조직하여 서문의 각 단락들이 상호 유기적으로 연결되는 결구의 편장법을 사용했다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이러한 문장 서술 기법을 사용했다는 것은 조태억이 문장의 구조에 깊은 이해를 가져 치밀하게 문장을 조직했음을 의미하면서 동시에 그가 문장의 창작에 상당한 능력을 지니고 있었음을 보여준다. 「백석시집서」 역시 그의 도덕적 문학관을 보여주지만, 이 글에는 단락간의 상호 유기적 관계가 해체되어 서론부터 결론까지 단선적으로 전개되는 순차적 서술 기법이 드러난다. 이런 서술 기법상의 차이는 조태억과 문집의 작자와의 관계에 의한 것이라고 생각되는데, 이런 차이점으로 볼 때 조태억의 문집 서문은 상투적이거나 관습적인 창작의 결과물이 아니라 대상에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 한 치밀한 작가 의식 아래 이루어진 뛰어난 문학적 창작물이라고 할 수 있다.
Gyeomjae Jotaeeok is one of the representative figures of the Soron faction in the late Joseon Dynasty, but the researcher's gaze has not yet reached due to the complicated political situation surrounding his life. However, he was recognized as a literary competence by the masters of the those days literary circles as a person at the center of the Soron faction school, and left the collection of works of 45 parts 20 books. This article is about the preface of Jotaeeok, which has not yet been mentioned in academia. There are 17 prefaces of Jotaeeok, and the preface of the literary works is the most with 9. In this article, three of them were examined: 「Baekseoksijipseo」, 「Seokhuibakbujasigoseo」, and 「Nohjujipseo」. Jotaeeok's preface focuses on narrative and debate, because he has a moral literary view that regards personality and virtue as the basis of sentences and discusses literature through personality and virtue. However, despite having such a traditional literary view, 「Nohjujipseo」 and 「Seokhuibakbujasigoseo」 shows that Jotaeeok closely organized the relationship between paragraphs for the narrative of preface and used the method of making the structure of each paragraph of preface to be connected organically. The use of this sentence description technique means that Jotaeeok has a deep understanding of the structure of the sentence and organized the sentence in detail, and at the same time shows that he had considerable ability in the creation of the sentence. In addition, Jotaeeok's 「Baekseoksijipseo」 shows the moral literary view that regards the personality and virtue of his own as the basis of sentences, but shows sequential narrative techniques that develop in a single line from introduction to conclusion by dismantling the organic relationship between paragraphs.This difference is thought to be due to the relationship between Jotaeeok and the author of the literary collection. In this regard, the preface of Jotaeeok is not the result of commonplace or conventional creation, but an excellent literary creation made under a careful writer's consciousness based on understanding of the object.
