자석연은 우리나라 고려, 조선시대 벼루사에서 가장 핵심적인 벼루였다. 그러나 자석연에 대한 학계의 연구 기반은 대단히 취약하다. 필자는 고문헌에 나타난 고려, 조선 시기 자석연에 대한 기록을 통해 우리나라 자석연의 정확한 역사와 종류 등에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 고문헌에 나타난 우리나라 자석연에 대한 최초의 기록은 고려말정몽주와 박익이 화답한 시에서 비롯된다. 그러나 자석연에 대한 보다 구체적인 기록은 조선 초기 1454년(단종 2년)에 완성된 뺷세종실록지리지뺸에 나타난 평창자석연에대한 기록이다. 그런데 李穡이 단양을 여행하며 지은 시 “신축년 겨울 丹山 가는 길에있었던 일을 기억하다(記辛丑年冬丹山途中)”와 김구용이 정몽주의 요청에 영월의 돌을 손수 깎아 벼루로 만들어 선물했다는 “포은대감이 벼루를 요구해 시와 함께 보내다(圃隱相公求硯, 歌以贈之.)” 등의 시를 통해 고려시대에 이미 단양, 영월, 평창 주변의 자석돌이 벼루로 사용되었음을 추측하게 한다. 고문헌의 기록을 통해 본 우리나라자석연의 발전사는 조선 전기 강원도 평창과 평안도 선천에서부터 시작하여 조선 중기에 이르면 안동자석연과 곽산자석연이 유명해지기 시작하였으며, 그 후 조선 중후기에 이르면 관서 지역의 벼루는 선천과 곽산의 자석연들이 쇠퇴하고 그 대신 위원과 희천의 자석연이 그 자리를 대신하게 되었다. 그 다음 조선 후기에는 상산자석연도더해지면서 조선시대 자석연의 발전을 이어갔다.
In Korea, the study of the ink stone was mainly conducted as a part of archaeological research, not from the interest and interest of ink stone itself, although there are some papers that studied the origin of the ancient ink stone excavated. This paper reveals that through the examination of the purple ink stone in Korea, especially in literary works, the ink stone, which is considered only as a craft art or folklore material, is not just a relic, but our precious traditional culture, in which human and spiritual values are hidden. As a result, I intend to expand the field of view and research for various methods of researching ink stone in Korea. In addition, detailed information on the history and producing areas of purple ink stone in Korea, which are directly mentioned in the ancient literature, will also help to more accurately appreciate the production area and era of real purple ink stone that are difficult to measure. We need to move beyond the narrow view of seeing the ink stone as just a hard and strict archaeological object, and approach it with a broader and more pluralistic view of the ink stone's humanistic and traditional cultural values and our ancient life culture or antiques. This paper intends to broaden the scope of research on Korea's purple ink stone by providing historical data on the production and development of the purple ink stone through data reorganization and analysis of the purple ink stone, which can be said to be the core of Korea's ink stone.
