본 연구는 기본심리욕구 만족과 좌절을 측정하기 위해 개발된 척도(BPNSFS)를 한국어로 번안하고 청소년을 대상으로 타당화하였다. 중․고등학생 927명을 대상으로 조사한 결과, 한국판 BPNSFS는 원척도와 동일하게 24문항 6요인 구조(자율성만족, 유능성만족, 관계성만족, 자율성좌절, 유능성좌절, 관계성좌절)가 지지되었으며, 양호한 수준의 내적합치도와 반분신뢰도, 집중타당도와 판별타당도가 확인되었다. 중․고등학생 집단별, 성별, 내재동기의 수준별 차이 없이 측정동일성이 지지되었으며, 초등학생 집단을 대상으로 교차타당성도 확보되었다. 또한 준거관련 타당도를 살펴본 결과, 기본심리욕구 만족은 긍정적 준거변인(동일시 조절, 내재적 조절, 수업참여)을 유의미하게 예측하였으며, 기본심리욕구 좌절은 부정적 준거변인(외적 조절, 내사 조절, 수업이탈)을 유의미하게 예측하였다. 특히 기본심리욕구 만족은 욕구좌절을 통제한 후에도 동일시 조절 및 내재적 조절과 유의미한 정적 상관을 나타낸 반면, 기본심리욕구 좌절은 욕구만족을 통제한 후에도 외적 조절 및 내사 조절과 유의미한 정적 상관을 나타냈다. 본 결과는 한국판 BPNSFS가 원척도와 유사한 심리측정적 속성을 가지고 있으며 중학생과 고등학생뿐만 아니라 초등학생들에게도 활용될 수 있는 타당한 척도임을 의미한다. 한국판 BPNSFS의 활용을 통해 기본심리욕구 만족과 좌절의 차별적 역할을 검증하는 연구가 활성화됨으로써 기본심리욕구 만족을 높이는 것뿐만 아니라 욕구좌절을 낮추기 위한 적극적 개입을 병행하려는 실천의 토대를 마련하는데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
This study aimed to validate the Korean version of the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale for adolescents (BPNSFS-KA). Data of a 927 Korean middle and high school students were analyzed. A series of confirmatory factor analyses evidenced that a six-factor structure specifying satisfaction and frustration of each psychological need as distinguishable constructs fits the data better than models specifying them as part of a continuum. Furthermore, the BPNSFS-KA demonstrated high internal consistency, split-half reliability, composite reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. The six-factor structure of need satisfaction and need frustration was found to be equivalent across gender, students with different levels of intrinsic motivation, and middle and high school students. In addition, cross validity confirmed that the six-factor structure was generalized in elementary school students. Satisfaction of each of the three needs was found to significantly contribute to the prediction of positive outcomes (autonomous motivation and class engagement), whereas frustration of the three needs significantly contributed to the prediction of negative outcomes (controlled motivation and class disengagement). Overall, the BPNSFS-KA proved to be a valid and reliable measure of basic psychological need satisfaction and need frustration among Korean adolescents.
