이광수는 러일전쟁(1904) 이래 일본의 비약적인 산업화발전상을 보고 조선의 현재와 장래를 생각할 때 조선 민족의 무력함, 특히 산업후진성으로 원시적 농업국가로 정체된 것을 뼈저리게 통감하고 오로지 산업화만이 일본을 이길 수 있는 유일의 길임을 확신했다. 우리는 단군족의 후손이고 고구려인의 자손이다. 우리라고 일본처럼 못할 이유가 없다. 할 수 있다고 절규했다. 이광수는 수탉싸움에서 실력양성의 진리를 도출할 수가 있었다. 우리 민족이 요구하는 것은 쇠고기 한 근(교육)과 구리가루 두 돈중(산업)이다. “우리는 싸워야 하오 이겨야 하오”라고 절규했다. 이에 건장한 수탉 한 마리를 배 값으로 사 와서 쇠고기 한 근 구리 가루 두 돈중을 탕을 쳐서 먹여 실력을 충분히 양성한 후 바다 건너온 일본닭과 결판싸움에서 승리를 거두었다. 실력양성론은 그의 독립철학이다. 1937년 동우회 사건이 발발할 당시 도산․춘원 등 181명이 총검거될 때 춘원의 수기(手記)도 압수되었다. 이 수기에 “실력을 양성한 뒤 총독에 대하여 정치상의 요구를 하고 응하지 않으면 해치운다.”라고 명기되어 있다. 이는 실력을 양성한 후 독립혁명을 일으키겠다는 것이다. 이광수는 마침내 ‘대군의 척후론’, 즉 산업화 미래 비전을 발표했다. 이때 이광수는 산업화와 관계되는 논설문 11편을 발표한 것으로 보아 그의 산업화 열망이 얼마나 강렬하고 절실했음을 확인할 수 있다. “상업에서 화신, 공업에서 경성방직의 확장발전은 결코 한 낱의 사실만이 아니오 뒤에 오는 ‘대군의 척후’임이 확실하다.”라고 한국 산업화 미래 비전을 발표했다. 여기서 척후(斥候, Scout)란 선발기업 화신상회와 경성방직이다. 대군(大軍, Large Army)은 후발기업 삼성․현대․LG․포항제철 등이다. 영국은 18세기 인클로저(enclosure)운동이라는 농업혁명을 일으켜 면직물산업이 진흥되었고 이를 바탕으로 하여 영국 산업혁명을 달성했다. 일찍이 이광수는 오산학교 교원시절 동회(洞會)운동을 일으켜 농촌자치운동을 일으켰는데 이는 새마을운동의 원조가 되었다. 새마을운동으로 보릿고개를 없앴고, 이를 바탕으로 하여 경부고속도로 완공(1970)을 성장동력으로 하여 대군(후발기업)이 벌떼처럼 몰려와서 산업혁명을 일으켜 ‘한강의 기적’을 창출했다. 이광수는 산업화 ‘대군의 척후론’ 미래 비전을 발표한지 30년 만에 한국 산업혁명이 일어날 것이라는 그의 미래전망은 적중했다는 점에서 그의 선견지명 예단은 얼마나 정확했는지 확인할 수 있다. 한국은 분단국인데다가 국민소득 85달러의 세계에서 가장 가난뱅이 원시적 농업국가가 전쟁의 잿더미 속에서 산업화를 달성, 국민소득 3만달러를 달성, 세계 경제대국 12위 반열에 올랐다는 역사적 사실은 UN 회원국 중 유일한 성공사례로 기록될 것이다.

In the eighteenth century England started the enclosure movement, and then industrial revolution broke out. At last Korean people set the Saemaul(New Community) Movement on foot, after they were armed with the spirit of can-do. In the end, they were completed the Kyongbu Expressway, being based on Agricultural revolution. Finally, Large Army(the rising enterprises) came on in swarms, they also made sure that their tasks were always completed on time and finally created ‘the miracle on the Hahn’. President Trump declared, “You had a dream-a Korean dream-and you built that dream into a great reality. In so doing, you performed the miracle on the Hahn that we see all around us.” He regidly defined, it is a Korean dream.
