이 논문은 사회 변동의 차원에서 한국불교의 문제와 해결 방안을검토하고자 한다. 즉, 역사적으로 의미 있는 사회구조적 변동이 진행되는 과정에서 한국불교가 어떤 선택을 하고, 그로 인한 결과에서 어떤 문제가 파생되었는지를 따져보려는 것이다. 이와 같은 입장에서 이 논문이 주목하는 역사적 전환점은 근대화, 산업화, 민주화, 탈근대화, 그리고 후기 정보화라는 거시적 사회변동과 맞닿아있다. 먼저 개항 이후 근대화, 산업화, 민주화의 격랑에 직면한 20세기의한국 불교가 어떤 도전과 한계를 경험했는지 간략히 살펴 보았다. 이어서 21세기에 당면하게 된 새로운 사회변동을 탈근대화와 후기정보화라는 차원으로 구분하여 각각의 특성을 논의하였다. 그리고탈근대화와 후기 정보화를 맞이하는 한국 불교의 새로운 도전과제연구논문역사적 전환점에서 마주한현대 한국 불교의 도전박수호(중앙승가대 불교사회학부 교수) 『한국불교사연구』(Journal for the Study of Korean Buddhist History) 제16호, pp.5~32, 서울: 한국불교사학회, 2019.12.31 6 한국불교사연구_ 제16호(2019.12.31) 가 무엇인지에 대해서도 고찰하였다.
This paper examines the problems and solutions of Korean Buddhism in terms of social change. In other words, this study attempts to examine what choice Buddhism has made in the course of historically significant social structural changes, and what problems are derived from the consequences. From this point of view, the historical turning point that this paper draws attention to is the macrosocial change of modernization, industrialization, democratization, post-modernization, and post-informatization. First, I briefly reviewed the challenges and limitations of Korean Buddhism in the 20th century, which faced the rush of modernization, industrialization and democratization since its opening. Subsequently, I discussed the characteristics of each of the new social changes in the 21st century in terms of post-modernization and post-informatization.
