Are Proper Names Indexicals? - A Defense of Recanati’s Indexical Theory of Proper Names -

In this paper, I examine Recanati’s indexical theory of proper names, according to which they are a kind of indexical. After providing the reasons for regarding them as indexicals, I attempt to defend Recanati’s theory from the existing criticisms. Rami argues that the theory faces difficulties with the individuation of proper name types and the explanation of ordinary people’s linguistic intuition. McKinsey argues that Recanati fails to reconcile his account of reference-determination with his claim that proper names have characters as their linguistic meanings. Throughout my defense of Recanati’s theory, its central claims are manifested and their consistency is shown. Finally, I deal with the generality argument reconstructed from Kripke’s criticism of a version of descriptivist view. This argument purports to show that Recanati’s theory yields the absurd consequence that every referring expression has as its lingusitic meaning the same kind of character as proper names have. I argue that such an absurdity does not follow from his theory. Given that Recanati’s indexical theory withstands al l these c riticisms, we can concl ude that i t is p romising as a t heory of meaning and reference about proper names and it deserves further elaboration.
