本稿は、周辺的な疑問文である聞き返す文に対する応答表現「そう」に注 目し、小説の会話文の中から聞き返す文に対する応答表現「そう」を収集し、その先行文の形によって、先行文の前の発話から一部分を切り取った形で聞き返す場合と、先行文の前の発話における内容を先行文の話し手が違う形式で聞き返す場合とに分け、考察を行った。 その結果、先行文の前の発話から一部分を切り取った形で聞き返す文には、意外性や驚きの意味を示す場合が多く、「はい、そう」のように「はい」とともに現れる例が多いことが明らかになった。なお、これらの先行文に対する応答表現「そう」は、「そう」の話し手が前の発話で言った内容はそれで正しいという意味を表していることがわかった。先行文の前の発話における内容を先行文の話し手が違う形式で聞き返す場合には、先行文の話し手の判断が含まれており、応答表現「そう」が先行文の話し手の判断で合っていることを表していることが分かった。しかし、両方の特徴が見られる中間的な性質をもつ例があり、その場合の応答表現「そう」は、「そう」の話し手が前の発話で確かにそう述べたことを表すと同時に、先行文の話し手の判断および認識に対する肯定の意味を表していると判断される。 今回の調査結果をもとに、教育現場における応答表現「そう」の指導において、名詞述語文やノダ文に加え、聞き返す文に対しても応答表現「そう」が用いられ、聞き返す文の形によって「そう」の意味が違うことが指導できるようになると思われる。
In this article, we focus on examples of the responding expression sou used as a response to echo-questions that is based on the preceding sentence, and explore the cases where sou occurs as a response to echo-questions in the conversational part of Japanese novels. Examples of the responding expression sou to echo-questions were divided into a question with the form of a portion from a preceding statement and a question with a form distinct from a preceding statement. Examples of the responding expression sou to echo-questions in the form of a portion from a preceding statement indicate surprise and often appears with hai. Further, sou indicates that the previous statement made by the speaker of this expression is correct. Examples of the responding expression sou to echo-questions in a form distinct from a preceding statement include the judgment or recognition of the speaker of the preceding sentence. Moreover, if the judgment or recognition of the speaker is included, the response expression sou expresses the meaning of consent to the judgment and recognition of the speaker in the preceding sentence. Therefore, the response expression sou in these examples represents an agreement with the preceding sentence that it is right in guessing or judging by the speaker of the preceding sentence. And there are intermediate cases where sou indicates both that the speaker uttering sou has said such-and-such exactly in the previous utterance and that it is right in guessing or judging by the speaker of the preceding sentence. From this survey, we found that the meaning of sou changes depending on the formal type of echo-questions.
