Dr. Baek Sung-wook's life and the spirit of performance -Focused on comparing with Great Master Wonhyo-

본 논문은 백성욱 박사의 삶과 수행 정신을 원효대사와의 비교를 중심으로 연구한 것이다. 두 분은 시간적 거리와 사회정치 환경상의 차이에도 불구하고 비교를 통해 조명할 수 있는 부분이 적지 않다. 첫째, 두 분은 모두 배움의 열정이 강하여 선진문물을 배우기 위하여 해외 유학을 시도했다. 원효대사는 두 번이나 당나라에 유학을 시도하다 마음을 깨치고 신라로 돌아왔다. 백성욱 박사는 독립운동 중 독일로 유학하여 선진문물을 배웠다. 둘째, 두 분의 지속적인 수행과 깨달음을 비교할 수 있다. 원효대사는 신라로 돌아와 저술과 수행에 집중하여 후일 지장보살 지위 이상에게만 주는 성사(聖師)의 칭호를 받았다. 백성욱 박사는 귀국하여 금강산에 수행하여 해인삼매를 얻었고 동국대 총장 이후 소사에서 수행법당을 열어 금강경 독송 수행과 미륵존여래불 염송을 기본으로 한 수행법을 창시하였다. 셋째, 두 분은 신앙대상으로서의 불타와 주요 경전을 선택한 점에서 비교된다. 원효대사는 미륵상경경종요와 금강삼매경론을 썼다. 백성욱 박사는 미륵존여래불 봉송과 금강반야바라밀경(금강경) 독송을 수행의 요체로 삼았다. 두 분은 모두 미륵을 신앙의 대상으로 삼았으며 유사한 경전을 중시하였다. 이러한 비교를 통하여 이 글은 백성욱 박사의 삶과 수행 정신을 밝히고자 하였다.

This paper focuses on the study of Dr. Baek Sung-wook's life and the spirit of performance focusing on the comparison with Great Master Wonhyo. Despite their differences in time distance and political and social environment there are many things that can be highlighted through comparison. First they both tried to study abroad to learn advanced culture because they were passionate about learning. Great Master Wonhyo tried to study abroad in the Tang Dynasty twice. But he woke up on the way and returned to Silla. During the independence movement Dr. Baek Sung-wook studied abroad in Germany, learned advanced culture and received his Ph.D. in his dissertation on Buddhist Metaphysics. Second, you can compare their continued performance and enlightenment. Great Master Wonhyo returned to Silla and focused on writing and performing, and later received the title of "Holy Teacher," which was given only to those above the status of " Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva." When Dr. Baek Seong-wook returned to Korea, he performed at Mt. Geumgang to obtain the "Haein Samādhi." After resigning as president of Dongguk University, he retired to Sosa and built up his performance. and created the performance method based on reciting diamond sutra and chanting Maitreya Buddha. Third, you can compare the two in their choice of the Buddha as the subject of faith and the main scripture. Great Master Wonhyo wrote "On Maitreya Buddha Sutra" and "Theory of Diamond Samadhi Sutra". Dr. Baek Sung-wook used chanting of Maitreya Buddha and reciting of the Diamond Sutra as the main elements of his performance. Both of them regarded Maitreya as the object of faith and valued similar scriptures. Through these comparisons this article sought to shed light on the life and performance of Dr. Baek Sung-wook.
