창업은 근본적으로 실패 확률이 높은 위험성 큰 도전으로, 한 번의 시도만으로 성공을 이뤄내기 어렵다고 알려져 있다. 따라서 창업은 도전-실패-재도전으로 이어지는 순환을 이어가며, 이러한 과정 속에 여러 차례 창업에 도전하는 연속 창업가들이 더 큰 성공률을 보이기도 한다. 이러한 창업의 순환 과정이 강조되고 있는 가운데, 특히나 국내 창업 생태계를 더욱 공고히 발전시키기 위해서는 ‘창업 실패 이후 재도전’과 관련한 학문적 연구가 더욱 활발히 진행될 필요가 있다. 비록 실패로 돌아갔을지라도 재창업에 도전하는 창업가들이 많은 사회가 되어 이들이 더욱 활발히 창업기업들을 이끌어가야 실패 경험과 그로부터 학습된 지식들이 공유되어 창업 생태계가 공고해질 수 있다. 따라서 실패라는 어려운 상황 속에서도 이를 극복하고 다시 재창업하는 창업가들의 특성에 주목해 볼 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 실패창업가가 지닌 특성에 주목하여 실패 이후에 재창업을 하는 창업가들은 어떠한 개인적 특성을 가지고 있는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 개인이 지닌 가장 기본적인 특성 중 하나인 연령에 주목하여 재창업에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고, 동업 경험 및 가정 내 추가 수입원과 같은 창업가의 자원이 연령과 재창업 사이의 관계를 어떻게 조절하는 역할을 하는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 재기중소기업개발원을 통하여 실패를 경험하 였던 창업가들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 기업가의 연령과 실패 후 재창업 확률은 역 U자 관계를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 실패창업가의 연령이 증가할수록 어느 정도까지는 재창업 확률이 증가하는 경향을 보이나, 일정 수준이 지나가면 다시 감소하는 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 동업 경험은 연령과 재창업 사이의 관계를 부정적으로 조절하는 것으로 나타났는데, 실패에 대하여 스스로가 아닌 동업자에 게로 실패의 원인을 귀인함으로써 실패에서 얻을 수 있는 긍정적인 측면을 저해하게 되어 재창업에는 부정적이 되는 것으로 설명해 볼 수 있다. 한편, 가정 내 추가 수입원은 연령과 재창업 사이의 관계를 긍정적으로 조절하는 것으로 나타났는데, 재창업이 지니는 위험성을 고려해 볼 때 추가 수입원이 있다는 것은 심리적인 안정감과 더불어 실질적인 재정적 안정감을 제공한 결과로 유추해 볼 수 있다.
Founding business has inherently high probability of failure, and is known to be difficult to achieve success with just one attempt. Entrepreneurship follows the cycle of ‘challenge – failure – re-challenge’. In this cycle, serial entrepreneurs – those with experience founding more than one venture – are likely to show improved performance in subsequent ventures. In particular, in order to further develop the domestic entrepreneurship ecosystem, it is important to understand what leads failed entrepreneurs to try again or to re-enter entrepreneurship following failure. Therefore, it is necessary to actively conduct academic research related to ‘re-challenge after the failure of entrepreneurship’. Even if it has failed, re-challenge of the failed entrepreneur should be activated. When failed entrepreneur re-entry and lead the ventures more actively, the failure experience and the knowledge learned from them can be shared to solidify the entrepreneurship ecosystem. Despite the academic and social interests, research on entrepreneurial re-entry after failure remains relatively unexplored. Entrepreneurial behavior depends on individual entrepreneurs themselves. Deciding to re-challenge another business after an entrepreneurial failure is deeply embedded in the failed entrepreneur’s characteristics. In order to examine the factor that influence re-entry of failed entrepreneur, individual characteristics should be focused. This study focused on one of the most basic characteristics of individuals, age, and examined the effect on re-entry. This study analyzed how a failed entrepreneur’s age affect re-entry decision. Moreover, this study examined how entrepreneurs' resources, such as multiple owner experience and additional income of household, play moderating role of the relationship between age and re-entrepreneurship. For the analyses, we surveyed the entrepreneurs who tried to re-start the subsequent business after the entrepreneurial failure through the “Revitalization Center for Strained Entrepreneur”. As the results of analyses, it was found that the failed entrepreneur's age and the probability of re-entry showed an inverted U-shape relationship. In other words, as the age of failed entrepreneur increases, the probability of re-entry increases to a certain extent, but decreases after a certain level. Multiple owner experience has been shown to negatively moderate the relationship between age and re-entry. It can be explained that the cause of the failure is attributed to the partner, not the self, and the positive aspects of the failure are hindered. Moreover, additional income of household has been shown to positively moderate the relationship between age and re-entry. Considering the risks of re-entrepreneurship, the existence of an additional source of income can provide financial stability as well as psychological stability.
