The purpose of this study is to account for feature of stop coda as a segmental sound found in deletion of stop coda syllable in Old Mandarin(OM, henceforth) within Optimality Theory(OT, henceforth). Based on the several problems of the previous analysis that have treated with stop coda as a tone, I propose an alternative analysis of Chinese stop coda as a segmental sound. For this, this paper applies OT to the field of stop coda in Chinese so as to make the study more scientific and promising. This paper develops as follow: In chapter Ⅰ, mainly introduces purpose and necessity of study. Specially comparing with previous analyses based by document research in method of reseach, OT gives a full illustration to phonological variations and principle of stop coda syllable through distinctive rankings of universal and violable constraints in different languages. In Chapter Ⅱ, critically reviews previous approaches to stop coda as a segmental sound within the phonetics, dialectology etc. Chapter Ⅲ analyzes change of stop coda with OT. And this analysis can be explained the aspect of development of stop coda between Middle Chinese and OM as a few major constraints and adjustment of ranking on the basis of stop coda segmental character. Chapter Ⅳ is a concluding summary.
