박세채는 어린 시절부터 이이의 학문과 인품을 존경했고, 이이의 문집초간본이 간행된 이후 그 초간본의 부족함에 대해 문제의식을 갖고 있었다. 다양한 분야에서 선현들의 학문적 성과를 정리하는 일에 매진했던박세채는 이이의 학문을 선양하기 위한 목적에서 이이의 문집 초간본을보완하는 작업을 진행했다. 그런데 사실의 측면에서 다양한 자료의 수집과 축적을 목표로 했던 박세채의 활동이 송시열에게는 전혀 다르게 인식되었다. 그것은 사실보다는 학문적 계통의 정비와 내적 단결을 위해 당위의 측면을 강조했던 송시열의 지향의 차이에서 비롯되었다.
Park Se-chae has admired Yi-i’s academics and character since childhood. After the firstcopy of Yi-i’s writings was published, he had a problem with the lack of the first book. Hedevoted himself to organizing the academic achievements of the senior confucian scholar invarious fields, and worked on supplementing the first draft of Yi-i’s writings with the aim ofadvancing the study of Yi-i. In terms of facts, Park Se-chae’s activities aimed at collecting andaccumulating various data were perceived completely differently by Song Si-yeol. It originatedfrom the difference in the intention of Song Si-yeol, who emphasized the aspect of thereason for the maintenance of the academic system and internal unity rather than the facts.
