As for political rhetoric, little attention has been paid to the figurative languages used in political debates while the type and number of words and sentences used by individual candidates, the impact of the debates on polls, the turn-takings, and the roles of gender have been discussed. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to analyze the figurative expressions of the U.S. presidential election debates from 2000 to 2016 from the perspective of cognitive semantics and find out the figures of speech as well as examine the linguistic features by types of figurative languages. The findings of this study are as follows. First, the frequency was higher in order of conceptual metaphor, conceptual metonymy, combinational metaphor, and metaphtonymy. Second, it is noteworthy that combinational metaphor has a higher figure than metaphtonymy in that little attention has been paid to the type of combinational metaphor in previous studies. Finally, it is also significant that the conventionalization of combinational metaphor is observed.
