Luther’s Music in the Reformation

본 논문은 역사적이고, 사회적인 배경 속에서 루터와 음악의 관계를 조명한다. 특히 본 연구는 이전의 연구가 신앙과 예배 안에서 루터의 음악에 대한 찬사에 함몰되었음을 지적하며, 루터가 시대적 상황 속에서 음악을 개혁의 도구로 의도적으로 활용함으로써 어떻게 종교개혁을 완성하고자 했는지, 또한 그 결과는 무엇이었는지 알아본다. 루터는 음악을 개혁의 도구로 활용하는데, 첫째, 그는 음악을 정치적 선전도구로 사용함으로 기존의 로마교회를 위협하는 새로운 신학적 사상을 음악에 담아 전 유럽에 퍼지게 하였다. 둘째, 그는 음악을 예배 개혁의 도구로 사용함으로 독일어 예배로의 전환에 회중들이 자연스럽게 적응하고 참여하도록 이끌었다. 마지막으로 그는 음악을 교육을 위한 도구로 사용하여 중산층을 위한 공교육 확립에 일조한다.

This paper sheds light on the relationship between Luther and music in a historical and social context. The study, in particular, points out that previous research was imbued with praise of Luther’s music in faith and worship, examines how Luther intended to complete the Reformation by purposefully using music as a tool for reform during the time period of the Reformation, and describes the consequences of Luther’s use of music. Luther used music as a tool of reform, first, by using it as a political propaganda tool. Luther used music to spread new theological ideas throughout Europe that threatened the existing Roman Church. Luther's first hymn was born with the purpose of establishing the faith of the martyrs and exposing the false conduct of the Roman Church. Second, he led the congregation to adapt and participate naturally in the transition to Germanlanguage worship by using music as a tool of worship reform. The use of German worship and music allowed Luther's theology to be confirmed inside and outside the church and helped the congregation's faith to grow. Finally, Luther used music as a tool for education to help establish public education for the middle class, so that the Lutheran Church could become the focal point of schools and communities.
