필자는 과학과 이성적 판단이 중시되는 현 시대에 역설적으로 라인홀드 니버(Reinhold Niebuhr)가 중시하였던 ‘신화’(myth)의 해석에 관하여 관심을 두고자 한다. 니버는 인간 이성을 앞세운 과학적 합리주의와 근대주의적 사관을 통한 인간 문명의 발전에 매우 비판적인 관점을 취하였다. 산업혁명 속에서 인간 정신의 황폐를 보았으며, 근대주의를 통한 제국주의의 팽창과 핵전쟁의 참상을 경험한 니버는 역사의 의미와 인간의 궁극적인 생의 목표 그리고 예수 그리스도의 십자가 죽음과 부활을 통한 새로운 역사의 창조에 대하여 ‘불가능의가능성’(impossible possibility) 윤리를 제시하였다. 필자는 이 논문을 통하여 니버의 신화론에 대하여 세 가지 관점을 중시하고자 한다. 첫째, 현 과학과 이성의 시기에 기독교적 ‘신화’에 대한 해석은 이성을 과도하게 중시함으로 자칫 인간의 정신과 생의 의미를 소홀히 할 수 있는 여지를 완화하여 줄 수 있다고 본다. 둘째, 니버의 신화관은 현 기독교가 중시하여야 할 더 심오한 종교적 가치를 윤리적인 관점에서 조명할 수 있도록 도움을 준다. 셋째, 니버의 신화론은 종교의 가치를 개인주의적인 맥락에서 보지 않고 관계론적 관점에서 해석함으로써 공공신학을 위한 실마리를 제공하여 줄 수 있다고 본다.
The author will focus on the topic of ‘mythology’ among the theology of Reinhold Niebuhr in the current age where the role of science and the rational decisions are emphasized more than ever. Niebuhr chose a critical stance towards the development of human civilization that was achieved through the concept of modernism and scientific rationalism led by human reason. He witnessed the desolation of the human mind during the industrial revolution. After experiencing the expansion of imperialism through modernism and the devastation of nuclear war, Niebuhr proposed the ethics of the ‘impossible possibility’ regarding the meaning of history, the ultimate goal of human life, and the creation of new history through the death on the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The author will also focus on the mythology of Niebuhr for the following three reasons. First, the interpretation of Christian ‘mythology’ in the contemporary era of science and reason, may alleviate the problem of neglecting the meaning of life and human mind due to immoderate emphasis on reason. Second, Niebuhr’s perspective on the mythology will support the reformation of profound religious values that contemporary Christianity should focus on. Third, the mythology of Niebuhr interprets the value of religion not from an individualistic context but the relational perspective, and therefore, it may provide a supportive foundation for public theology.
