재닛 윈터슨(Jeanette Winterson)은 자신의 동성애 성향과 자전적 경험을바탕으로 1985년 오렌지만이 유일한 과일은 아니다 (Oranges are Not theOnly Fruit)를 출간하며 당시로서는 파격적인 작품으로 영국 소설계에 데뷔했다. 윈터슨의 오렌지만이 유일한 과일은 아니다 는 동성애적 사랑도 돌연변이 사랑이 아닌 진솔한 사랑의 관계가 될 수 있음을 묘사한다. 윈터슨은 작품을 통해 동성애자들이 겪는 핍박과 고난, 역경을 신랄하게 묘사했으며, 이에굴하지 않는 레즈비언 재닛(Jaenette)의 행보를 통해 동성애를 하나의 순수한 인간관계로서 인정해줄 것을 피력한다. 본고에서는 이와 같은 내용을 담은 윈터슨의 작품을 퀴어 이론의 창시자라고도 불리는 주디스 버틀러(JudithButler)의 주요 저서인 젠더 트러블 (Gender Trouble)을 중심으로 연구할 것이다. 버틀러의 동성애 담론을 윈터슨의 작품 분석에 적용하고, 작품 속 재닛이 동성애의 대척점에 서있는 것으로 묘사되는 교회(이성애 담론을 표상)를가로지르는 다양한 모습이 지니는 의미를 구체적으로 연구할 것이다. 이를 통해, 윈터슨이 이 시대에 추구하는 새로운 성규범체계는 무엇인지를 구체적으로 밝힐 수 있을 것이다.
In 1985, Jaenette Winterson published an extraordinary book, Oranges are Not theOnly Fruit, which is based on her own story and tendency of homosexuality. Orangesare Not the Only Fruit is Winterson’s first book that just got much of attentionsbecause it contains very controversial theme that homosexual love can bequintessential like heterosexual love. She described the realities of homosexuals faceserious violences, hardships and sufferings through Jaenette the lesbian. Wintersonwanted to persuade people who recognize homosexuals also can build pure loverelationships. In this paper, I would like to study Winterson’s text by researchingGender Trouble that is written by Judith Butler who noted as a founder of queertheory. To analyze Winterson’s text with Butler’s discourse of homosexuality, I willfind out how the discourse can cross the church that symbolizes a kingdom ofheterosexuality by Jaenette the lesbian. In conclusion, I would like to reveal what thenew system of sexual norms that Winterson is pursuing with her text.
