1990년대 중반 이후 ‘공간적 전환(spatial turn)’이라는 용어가 학계에서 널리 회자되고 있다. 전환이라는 용어가 지금까지 소홀히 여겨지던 어떤 측면에 대해 다시 관심을 가지게 될 때 사용된다는 점에 주목하면, 공간적 전환이란 그동안 인간의 사회활동이 이루어지는 빈 용기나 배경 정도로 여겨지던 공간에 다시 주목해야한다는 의미일 것이다. 여기서 우리가 공간적 전환의 의미를 제대로 이해하기 위해서는, 왜 우리가 공간에 다시 주목해야 하는가? 라는 질문을 비롯해 공간적 전환이 의미하는 구체적인 전환의 내용과 의미에 대해 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 이 글에서는 먼저, 공간적 전환이 근대성에 대한 성찰을 바탕으로 탈근대적 대안을 모색하는, 이른바 탈근대 담론의 흐름 가운데 하나라는 점에 주목한다. 다음으로, 이러한 점에 입각하여, 전환의 구체적인 내용으로 ①공간에서 장소로 ②이성에서 감성으로 ③국가에서 로컬로 라는 세 가지 대안적 가치를 제시하고, 그러한 가치들을 실현하기 위한 실천적 전략들에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 특히, 장소, 감성, 로컬이라는 세 가지 대안적 가치가 상호 관련되어 있으며, 새로운 사회구성 속에서 이들이 유기적으로 결합되어 탈근대적인 대안적 삶의 방식을 제시할 수 있음에 주목하고자 한다.
Since the mid-1990s, the term ‘spatial turn’ has been widely spoken in the academic world. Note that the term 'turn' is used when one becomes interested in a certain aspect that has been neglected so far. It would mean that we need to pay attention to the space that has been regarded as empty container or background for human social activities again. Here, in order for us to properly understand the meaning of spatial turn, why should we pay attention to space again? In addition, it is necessary to examine the specific content and meaning of turn that spatial turn means. First of all, this article pays attention to the fact that spatial turn is one of the contexts of so-called post-modern discourse that seeks a post-modern alternative based on reflection on modernity. Next, based on these viewpoints, I will present three alternative values of 'turn': 1) From space to place 2) From reason to emotion 3) From nation-state to local as the specific contents of turn. And I would like to consider practical strategies for realizing these values. In particular, it is analyzed that the three alternative values of place, emotion, and local are interrelated, and that these values can be presented as a post-modern alternative way of life combined with each other in a new spatial composition of society.
