본고는 The Korea Magazine에 수록된 英譯 이규보 한시를 개관하고 그 특징에 대하여 살펴볼 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 1917년부터 1919년까지 간행된 영문 잡지 『코리아 매거진』에 수록된 이규보의 한시와 관련된 기사를 살핀 결과, 기존에 5편이 들어 있었다고 했지만 10편이 수록되어 있다는 것을 발견하고 그 선별 과정과 번역에 나타난 특성에 대해 논하였다. 이규보의 한시는 단독으로 제시되기 보다는 기사의 일부로 존재하는 경우가 더 많았다. 기사 제목만으로는 이규보의 한시가 소개되어 있을 것으로 예측하기 힘들었다. 오히려 기사 내용을 살피던 중 예상치 못한 곳에서 영역 한시를 만날 수 있었다. 이규보의 한시가 들어 있는 5개의 기사에는 모두 기사 작성자가 밝혀져 있지 않았다. 그러나 다른 자료와의 비교 검토를 통해 이 작성자는 제임스 게일일 것으로 추정하였다. 영역 한시에는 대체로 제목도 없고, 한시를 번역한 것이라고 밝힌 바도 없었다. 그러나 추정되는 원문과 비교해 볼 때 의심의 여지 없이 한시를 번역했음을 확인했다. 게일은 한시 원문의 의미를 상당히 충실하게 옮겼다. 하지만, ‘道, 造物, 天’과 같은 단어를 ‘God’으로 번역하여 시 전체가 기독교적 세계관을 갖는 것으로 번역하는 특성을 보였다. 아울러 게일은 이규보의 작품에서 유머와 위트를 찾아내었다. 끝으로 우리는 본 연구를 통하여 삽입시 형태의 존재 방식이 20세기 초반 영역 고전시의 일반적인 존재 양상이었을 수도 있다고 추정한다. 따라서 영역 한시의 초기적 양상을 논의하기 위해서는 이 시기 자료들을 폭넓게 그리고 세밀하게 검토하여 연구 대상이 되는 작품들을 수합하는 작업부터 수행되어야 할 것이다.
This study aims to introduce the poems of Yi Kyoobo(李奎報), which are included in the Korea Magazine published from 1917 to 1919. While scanning the 5 articles of the Korea Magazine containing Yi Kyoobo’s content, we discovered ten embedded Yi Kyoobo’s poems instead of the previously assumed five. This paper also aims to analyze the characteristics of selection and translation process regarding the ten poems displayed in the magazine. Yi Kyoobo’s poems were more often present as part of articles than being independently published, thus demonstrating the need to search within the articles. There is great difficulty in foreseeing the content of the articles by simply reading the titles, thus searching for Yi Kyoobo’s poems embedded within the articles require a full examination of the article. Oftentimes, Yi Kyoobo’s poems were discovered in unexpected areas inside the article. In the five articles containing Yi Kyoobo’s poems, not all of the authors of the article could be identified. Through comparison of literary characteristics with related documents, we predict that it was in fact James S. Gale who wrote these five articles. In one of Gale’s English poems resembling the content of a similar Yi Kyoobo’s poem, there does not exist a title nor does it mention that it is a translation. However, when compared to what is suspected to be the original poem, we have strong confidence that Gale’s version was a translation of the poem. Assuming such, we see that Gale directly moved the content of each poem in his translation. However, one notable difference with the original and the translated version is that Gale translated words such as ‘道, 造物主, 天’ into ‘God’, thereby shifting the poem’s perspective into that of a Christian’s. Furthermore, we see that Gale highlighted the humor and wit in Yi Kyoobo’s poems. Lastly, analyzing this translation demonstrates that the technique of “insertion poetry” in classic poetry in 20th century era was initiated by Gale. Therefore, to debate the initial characteristics of Gale’s poem, it becomes necessary to have a broad perspective in studying poetry. Overall, there exists a need for a greater collection of appropriate literary works in order to analyze the details of poetry in this era.
