본고는 제주방언을 대상으로 한 음성학 연구들의 현황을 살피고, 하위 연구 분야에 따른 제주방언의 연구 흐름을 통하여 이후 연구해야 할 과제를 제시하는 것이 목적이다. 제주방언 음성학 연구는 초기에는 ‘ᄋᆞ’를 중심으로 한 단모음 연구에 집중되었으나, 2000년대에 들어서면서 자음과 이중모음 그리고 운율에 대한 연구로 주제가 확장됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 ‘세대, 성별, 지역적 요인’이라는 사회언어학적 요소들을 고려함에 따라 방언의 변화를 다양한 시각으로 살펴본 연구들과 그 성과도 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 토대로 향후 연구에서는 일상 대화를 관찰할 수 있는 제주방언 음성 자료를 확보하는 것과 연구 대상을 보다 다양하게 선택하여 연구를 진행하는 것, 그리고 산출 실험뿐만 아니라 지각 실험을 실시하여 제주방언 화자들의 말소리에 대해 종합적으로 연구하는 것에 과제의 주안점을 두어야 한다고 하였다.
The purpose of this study was to look into the current status of Jeju dialect phonetic studies and to forecast future topics of research in various sub-research fields. Jeju dialect phonetic studies were initially focused on monophthongs centered on ‘ᄋᆞ.’ This research expanded to include the study of consonants, diphthongs, and prosody in the 2000s. Studies also began to examine how the dialect changed accounting to sociolinguistic factors, such as generation, gender, and region. Based on past studies, this study suggested that in the phonetic Jeju dialect data should be collected by observing daily conversations, that more diverse participants should be recruited for studies, and that both perceptual and production experiments should be used in research on the Jeju dialect.
