이 논문은 김남주 시에 형상화되는 ‘감옥’ 공간의 상징성을 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 본고의 문제의식은 김남주의 시작 기간의 대부분이 영어의 생활 속에서 이루어졌다는 데에 있다. 약 10년의 영어의 생활 속에서 시를 창작한 김남주의 텍스트에는 ‘감옥’ 공간이 반복적으로 형상화된다. 한편, 각각의 ‘감옥’ 공간은 어떠한 상징성을 내포하고 있음에 착안하여 김남주 시의 ‘감옥’ 공간이 내포한 의미를 구명하고자 하였다. 텍스트의 공간은 작가의 직관 공간을 바탕으로 한 체험 공간의 상상적 재구성이라 할 때, 김남주의 텍스트에 드러난 ‘감옥’ 공간의 상징성을 구명하는 것은 기존의 연구와는 다른 새로운 시각에서 그의 시를 해석하는 작업이 될 것이다. 김남주가 형상화하는 감옥은 우선적으로 판옵티콘의 시대를 상징한다. 푸코 식으로 말하자면 감옥은 비정상으로 규정된 이들을 배제하는 공간이며 규율 권력의 내면화를 작용하는 공간이다. 이런 맥락에서 감옥은 물리적 구속의 공간일 뿐 아니라, 당대 시대 상황을 은유하는 공간으로 확장된다. 다음으로 시적 주체의 존재론적 불안을 야기하는 공간을 상징한다. 감옥은 인간성을 극도로 말살하여 인간의 본원적인 자아 정체성마저 소멸시키는 공간이다. 이러한 감옥의 속성은 집, 고향 등의 장소와 대조를 이루며 정체성의 불안과 존재론적 결핍을 유발하는 공간으로 형상화된다. 공포와 구속을 통해 인간 본원의 정체성을 말살하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 (서정)시 쓰기를 통해 인간성을 지키고자 하는 의지가 발현되는 공간이다. 시 쓰기는 감옥 시스템 나아가 당대 시대 현실에 대한 내적 응전이며 이를 통한 인간성 회복은 곧 연대와 저항의 단초로 작용하는 것이다. 시 속에 표현된 공간은 궁극적으로 시인이 가지는 세계관과 밀접한 연관을 갖는다. 김남주의 시작 활동 절반 이상이 영어의 생활 속에서 이루어진 바, 김남주의 시 텍스트에서 반복적으로 형상화되는 감옥 공간은 시인의 세계관, 내면의식 등을 한층 깊숙이 파악할 수 있는 시적 구성물일 것이다.
The paper aims to reveal the symbolism of the "jail" space embodied in Kim Nam-ju's poem. The main problem of this book is that most of Kim Nam-ju's beginning period was in English life. Kim Nam-ju's text, which created poetry in about a decade of English life, repeatedly embodies a "jail" space. On the other hand, the meaning of the prison space in Kim Nam-ju's city was to be understood based on the symbolism of each prison space. Given that the space of text is an imaginary reconstruction of the experience space based on the author's intuitive space, it will be a task to interpret his poems from a new perspective, different from previous research, to explore the symbolism of the "jail" space revealed in Kim Nam-ju's text. The prison that Kim Nam-ju embodies first symbolizes the era of Panopticon. In Foucault's way, prison is a space that excludes those who are abnormally defined and acts as an internalization of discipline power. In this context, the prison expands into a space for constraining thinkers and furthermore a metaphor for the situation of the times. Next, it symbolizes the space that causes existential anxiety of the poetic subject. The prison, which is the space of Panopticon, is a place where humanity is wiped out even the inherent identity of human beings. These prison properties contrast with places such as home and hometown, and are shaped into spaces that cause identity insecurity and existential deficiency. Although it destroys the identity of human origin through fear and restraint, it is nevertheless a space where the will to protect humanity is expressed through writing poems. Writing poetry is an internal response to the realities of the contemporary era, and the restoration of humanity is the beginning of solidarity and resistance.
