스피노자에 의하면 인간은 현실적으로 실존하게 되는 순간 코나투스적 존재라고 한다. 코나투스는 기쁨이나 슬픔이라는 촉발 장치를 필요로 한다. 스피노자의 코나투스에 의한 기쁨과 슬픔의 상태는 『토지』와 『혼불』의 생명력이 진행하는 방향과 일치한다. 『토지』는 기쁨의 방향으로 진행하고 『혼불』은 슬픔의 방향으로 진행한다. 스피노자는 능동의 경우에는 오직 기쁨의 감정과 그에 따른 능동적인 욕망만 존재한다고 했다. 기쁨에서 생겨난 욕망은 코나투스이기는 하지만 외부의 원인에 의해 증가된 완전성으로 인해 배가 된 욕망이라는 것이다. 서희가 간도에서 자신의 주체적인 아이디어로 길상이와 일체가 되어 재산을 이루어가는 과정은 혀를 두를 정도로 용의주도하다. 자신의 피붙이라고는 한 명도 없는 서희가 평사리 마을 사람들과 함께 간도를 떠날 때는 홀로 선 자신의 위기를 그들과 함께 극복해보겠다는 강한 의지 때문이다. 즉 처음부터 서희는 최참판댁의 영광을 되찾고 자신의 실존을 보존하기 위해 다른 이웃들과 함께 연대 했기 때문에 가능했다. 서희라는 홀로 선 개인이 아니라 함께 어려움과 기쁨을 함께 한 김훈장이나 용이네, 공노인 등을 비롯한 이웃들과의 조화로운 삶은 서희가 최참판댁을 지켜야겠다는 최참판댁 가문 이상의 민족이라는 공동체에 대한 염원 때문이다. 이에 비해 『혼불』 속에서 일어나는 일련의 사건들, 강모와 효원의 결혼, 청암부인의 죽음, 강모의 만주로의 도피, 강모와 강실이와의 근친상간, 춘복이의 강실이의 강간, 강실이의 피신, 고리 배미의 천민인 백단이와 만동이 아버지의 뼈를 청암부인의 묘에 투장하는 사건 등 중간 중간 끼어드는 풍속이나 신화 이야기, 액막이 연 이야기, 백제 이야기, 만주 이민 역사 등, 대부분의 이야기는 도도한 작가정신에 의해서 인물들의 삶을 규정하는 객관적 현실과 유리된 채 상징, 언어의 반복, 시각적 이미지인, 자연 제재물이나 사물에의 감정 이입, 모티브의 반복과 불연속적 사건들의 병치 등 ‘순간의 상태성’을 표현하는 수동적 정념에 휩싸인 인물만을 그려내고 있다. 작가 의식에 의해서 『혼불』이 전달하려는 것은 서사적 성격을 초월한 영원의 본질적 고양을 경험한다는 것은 오직 작가의 관념으로써의 발현이지 작품 속에서는 수동적이고 맹목적인 인물로만 드러날 뿐이다.
