이 연구는 근대 초기 출판된 일련의 서양 예법서 가운데 『교제신례』에 초점을 맞춰 이 서적의 간행과 유통 의의를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 근대 초기 서양 외국인과의 교류가 본격화되기 이전까지 ‘교제’는 주로 국가와 국가 간의 외교적 차원에서 쓰이는 경우가 많았다. 그런데 구미 각국에 문호를 개방하고 이로부터 국내에 유입된 서양 외국인들이 많아지면서 그들과의 교제를 위한 예법의 필요성이 대두되기 시작하였다. 『교제신례』는 그러한 과정에서 출판된 서적이다. 당시 출판된 서양 예법서의 대부분이 번역과 편역으로 이루어진 것과 달리 『교제신례』는 법학을 전공한 국내 저자 유동작에 의해 집필되었다. 책의 집필 동기와 목적 역시 저자의 직접적인 경험과 필요로부터 비롯되었다. 또 단행본 간행 이후 같은 내용이 잡지 『소년한반도』에 연재되었는데 이 과정에서 필자가 다르게 표기된다. 『교제신례』의 간행 및 유통 과정에서 보이는 이 같은 양상은 근대 초기 서적의 출판과 유통에 있어 특이점을 보인다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 크다. 요컨대 『교제신례』는 근대 초기 새롭게 요구되는 근대적 지식 가운데 서양인들과의 교제를 위한 예법에 관한 내용이 대두되었음을 보여주는 동시에 그러한 지식이 번역이나 편역이 아닌 체험과 경험에 바탕한 저작의 출현을 예고한다. 나아가 잡지 연재나 신문 광고, 증판 등을 통해 이러한 지식의 필요와 요구가 몇몇 지식인에 한정되지 않고 독자 대중에게 유통되고 전파될 가능성을 엿보인다는 점에서 의미 있다.
The purpose of this study is to consider the implications of the publication and distribution of 『Gyojesinrye(交際新禮)』 created for engaging in exchange with Westerners, among a series of books of etiquette published in Korea, from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The 'social intercourse(交際)’ was a term which was often used in the diplomatic relation between countries, before the full-fledged exchange with Western foreigners began in the early modern period. The etiquette for the exchange with Western foreigners began to be increasingly required, as the number of them from each of European and American countries to which doors were opened was increased. 『Gyojesinrye(交際新禮)』 is the book published in the process. Different from the most of books of Western etiquette published at that time, which were primarily organized with translation and trans-edition, 『Gyojesinrye』 was written by Yu Dongjak(柳東作), a Korean writer who majored in law. The motivation for writing the book was characteristically derived from the author's direct experiences. In addition, it was published serially in <Sonyeonhanbando> after the publication of its independent volume, and some cases in which the author's marks were changed appeared in the process. Such an aspect shown in the publication and distribution process of 『Gyojesinrye』 provides significant suggestions, in that some interesting cases about the publication and distribution of the early modern books were derived from it. 『Gyojesinrye』 thus has an implication, in that it demonstrates that the contents about etiquette for social intercourse with Westerners made its appearance, among modern knowledge which was newly demanded in the early modern period, while it also revealed that such knowledge was not resulted from translation or trans-edition, but from inner expression based on experiences and trials. Furthermore, it also implicates that such inner expression and demand were not limited to a few intellectuals, but were likely to be distributed among and transferred to public readers.
