There has been a growing awareness of the importance of collocation competence in second language acquisition. Acquiring collocational knowledge is considered to be one of the most significant language elements to reach for native-like language proficiency. A large number of studies indicate that L2 learners of English have a difficulty in retrieving delexical verb-noun combinations, owing to the fact that the meaning of delexical verbs is light and depleted. This study examines the effectiveness of two different methods for teaching English delexical collocations: form-focused instruction (FFI) and meaning-focused instruction (MFI). 110 participants were assigned randomly to one of the two groups; an FFI group and an MFI group. During the four weeks of treatment, the experimental group was provided with different types of explicit collocation teaching from the control group. The results suggest explicit instruction adequately facilitates the development of L2 collocational knowledge. Pedagogically, these results suggest that explicit instruction on verb-noun collocations may benefit Korean L2 learners, especially learners of a low-intermediate case.
