채플은 기독교대학으로서 해야 할 가장 큰 사역 가운데 하나라고 할 수 있다. 채플을 통해서 복음을 전하고 학생들이 예수 그리스도를 접할 수 있기 때문이다. 이런 중요한 목적을 가진 채플이 시대적인 흐름을 잘 반영하지 못해서 학생들로부터 외면을 당하고 있는 상황임은 부인하기 어렵다. 무엇보다도 학생들이 과거와는 많이 다르다. 비주얼 세대이고 정보화 세대에서 자랐으며 깊은 사고(思考)와 성찰보다는 감각적인 것을 추구하는 세대이기 때문이다. 그런 세대에게 복음을 전하는 것은 과거의 방법으로는 어렵다고 본다. 채플의 메시지 역시 학생들의 눈높이에 맞는 방법이어야 한다. 이를 위하여서는 다양한 문화적인 채널을 통해서 복음을 소개해야 하며, 강요하기보다는 권유하며, 선포하기보다는 설득하며, 말로 하기 보다는 오감(五感)을 동원해서 느끼게 해주는 채플이 필요하다. 이 글은 이러한 채플의 다양한 방법 가운데 음악, 특히 오페라를 소재로 한 채플을 소개하고 있다. 오페라의 내용을 주제로 해서 메시지의 핵심을 잡아 학생들의 귀에 전달하고, 화려한 영상미와 음향을 통해서 학생들의 시야를 잡기 위한 시도라고 할 수 있다. 이 글은 필자가 실제로 실시해서 효과를 보았던 내용을 기술하였으며 수많은 인문학적 채플의 한 형태이다. 오페라의 주제인 사랑, 이별, 슬픔, 죽음 등의 주제를 통해서 인간의 궁극적인 질문인 사랑과 삶과 죽음에 대한 이야기를 전달하려고 했다. 동시에 오페라라고 하는 수준 높은 매개체를 메시지에 접목함으로써 채플의 질적 수준 역시 향상시키려고 했다. 이 글을 통해서 향후 기독교대학의 채플이 다양한 문화적인 채널을 활용할 뿐 아니라 채플의 문화적 수준 역시 향상시켜야 할 필요성을 제시함으로 결론을 맺고 있다.
Chapel is one of the biggest missions as a Christian university. This is because it conveys the gospel and allows students to access Jesus Christ. It is hard to deny that Chapel with this important purpose is being shunned by students because it does not reflect the trend of the times well. First of all, students are very different from the past. This is because it is a visual generation, grew up in an information generation, and seeks something more sensual than deep thinking and reflection. It is difficult in past ways to preach the gospel to such a generation. Chapel's message should also be a way to fit students' eyes. To this end, we need to introduce the gospel through various cultural channels, recommend them rather than force, persuade them rather than proclaim it, and use five senses rather than words. Among the various ways of these chapels, this article introduces chapel based on music, especially opera. Under the theme of the opera, it is an attempt to catch the heart of the message and deliver it to the students' ears, and to gain a view through the colorful images and sounds. This article describes what the author has actually done and worked on, and is a form of numerous literary chapels. Through themes such as love, separation, sadness and death, the theme of the opera, I tried to convey a story about love and life and death, the ultimate question of man. At the same time, the quality of chapel was also improved by incorporating a high-quality medium called opera into the message. This article concludes that the future Chapel of Christian University not only utilizes various cultural channels, but also suggests the need to improve the cultural level of Chapel.
