현대 교회는 세속의 문화와 사상을 제대로 진단하지 못하고 그들의 문화에 천착하지 못함으로써 효율적인 복음전도에 실패하고 있다. 교회가 세속 문화를 적극적으로 수용하지 못하는 데는 세속 문화를 교회가 수용하면 자칫 복음의 본질을 훼손할 수 있다는 막연한 두려움이 내재해 있기 때문이다. 이에 대해 본 논문은 『그리스도교 교양』에서 세속 문화를 대하는 아우구스티누스의 태도에서 이 문제에 대한 답을 찾고자 한다. 세속 문화의 수용 문제는 초대 교회 시대부터 그리스도인 사이에서 첨예하게 대립된 중대한 사항이었다. 아우구스티누스는 『그리스도교 교양』을 통해 로마에 새로운 기독교적 자유교육을 정착시키기를 원했고, 이를 위해 세속 문화의 수용 에 대한 원칙을 제시한다. 그는 『그리스도교 교양』에서 그리스도인이 세속의 문화 자원을 어떠한 시각으로 보아야 하는지, 그것을 사용한다면 어느 정도 이용해야 하는지, 그것은 복음의 본질을 훼손할 여지가 없는지를 종합적으로 검토한다. 아우구스티누스는 이방인들의 말이라도 옳은 것은 기독교적 용도로 수용해야 하며, 이러한 태도가 기독교 전통과 부합한다고 주장한다. 그는 그리스도인들에게 주변 사람들과 교류하고 복음을 전하기 위해서는 세속 문화를 적극 수용해야 한다고 강조한다. 물론 그는 로마의 이교 문화를 무분별하게 수용하는 것을 거부하고, 세속 문화의 옥석을 가린 후 그리스도인에게 합당한 세속 문화 수용의 원칙을 제시한다. 그는 어떠한 세속 문화가 하나님의 말씀을 이해하는 일에나 가르치는 일에 도움이 되는가를 중요시한다. 세속 문화에 대한 아우구스티누스의 관점은 수 세기에 걸쳐 교회의 교육과 복음전도에 주요한 원칙을 제공했다.
The modern church has failed to effectively evangelize the world by failing to properly diagnose the culture and ideas of the world and by failing to adhere to their culture. The reason why the church does not actively accept secular culture is because there is a vague fear that if the church accepts secular culture, it could undermine the nature of the gospel. In this regard, this paper seeks to find a clue to the solution in Augustine's attitude in dealing with secular culture in De doctrina christiana. The issue of the acceptance of secular culture has been a grave issue, sharply divided among Christians since the early church days. Augustinus wanted to establish a new Christian free education in Rome through De doctrina christiana, and to that end, he works hard on the issue of accepting secular culture. In De doctrina christiana, he comprehensively examines how Christians should view the cultural resources of the world, how much they should use them if they use them, and whether they have no room to undermine the nature of the gospel. Augustine argues that what strangers say on the issue of accepting secular culture should be accepted for Christian purposes, and that this attitude is in line with Christian tradition. He stresses that in order for Christians to interact with the people around them and to preach the gospel, they must actively embrace secular culture. Of course, he refuses to indiscriminately accept Roman pagan culture, and puts forward the principle of accepting secular culture, which is reasonable for Christians, after distinguishing between the good and bad of secular culture. He examines in practice what secular culture helps him to understand or teach God's word. Augustine's view of secular culture has provided major principles for the education and evangelism of the church over the centuries.
