최윤배는 1955년 12월 28일 경상북도 영양군 영양읍에서 아버지 최동조와어머니 김목출 사이에서 태어났다. 불신자 가정에서 태어났지만 대학 진학을위해 서울에 상경하며 동신교회에 출석하면서 갑작스러운 회심을 하며 그리스도인이 된다. 6년 후 복음을 더욱 잘 전하기 위해서 목사가 되는 소명을 받는다. 장로회신학대학교 신학대학원과 대학원 졸업 후, 네덜란드로 유학을 가서 마르틴 부처와 칼뱅의 성령론과 기독론의 관계라는 제목으로 박사학위를 취득한다. 평택대학교와 서울장신대학교에서 조직신학 교수를 역임하고 2002년에장로회신학대학교 조직신학 교수가 된다. 그는 신앙과 지식, 경건과 학문의 조화를 추구한다. 마르틴 부처와 장 칼뱅을 기초로 한 장로교적 전통 하에서 현대신학 전반에 이르기까지, 보수에서 진보까지, 통전적이며 종합적 신학을 지향한다. 그는 성서의 규범적 원리를 따라 장로교 정체성을 확립한다. 말씀-직분, 본질-정체를 결합시킨다. 그에 따르면 그리스도와 성령은 결코 분리되지 않는다. 지상에서 그리스도는 성령의 담지자로서 구속의 성취를 위한 삼중직 사역을 했고 천상에서 그리스도는 성령을 보내면서 삼중직을 현재적으로 행한다. 성령과 말씀, 성령과 교회는 불가분리의 관계에 있지만 성령이 말씀/교회보다크다. 최윤배는 구원의 순서에 있어서는 시간적/단계적 순서가 아닌, 신학적/논리적 순서로서 이해하며 그럼에도 불구하고 시간적 순서에서 분명하게 앞서거나 뒤서는 것은 존재한다. 속죄의 범위의 문제에 있어서는 제한속죄적 입장이지만 다른 교회의 전통에 대한 사유의 가능성을 열어둔다.

The purpose of this article is to show the life and thought of Yoon-Bae Choi. He was born in Yeongyang-gun on December 28, 1955. Being born in an unbelieving family, he became a Christian with a “sudden conversion” in a Sunday worship Service at Dongshin Church in Seoul. Six years later, he received a calling to become a pastor in order to preach the Gospel. After finishing M.Div. and Th.M. from Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary, he went to study theology in the Netherlands and got the degree of Ph.D. The title of his dissertation was “The Relation between Christ and Holy Spirit by Martin Bucer and John Calvin.” Yoon-Bae Choi seeks harmony between faith and knowledge, piety and science. He has pursued integrative and comprehensive theology from the perspective of the Presbyterian tradition based on the theology of Martin Bucer and John Calvin from modern theology to conservative theology and liberal theology. He established a Presbyterian identity according to the regulative principles of the Bible. He united Word-Office and Essence-Policy. According to him, Christ and the Holy Spirit have an inseparable relation. As the bearer of the Holy Spirit, Christ worked on this earth three offices as Prophet, Priest, and King. As the sender of the Holy Spirit, Christ works presently three offices in Heaven. Both the Holy Spirit and the Word of God as well as both the Holy Spirit and the Church are inseparable, but the Holy Spirit is more important than the Word and the Church. Yoon-Bae Choi understands the order of salvation as theological and logical, not as chronological and stepwise. He supports limited atonement in the matter of atonement. But he is open for the position of other church traditions.
