The present study aims to investigate the metonymic expressions in the Gospel of Mark to find out what their characteristics are in terms of the cognitive linguistic view. 98 metonymic expressions are found: 97 metonymic expressions are classified as referential use, 1 expression as non-referential use; 47 expressions as intrinsic association, 51 expressions as extrinsic association, and there exist 26 different conceptual metonymic types in total. The study suggested that the interpretation of metonymy in the Gospel of Mark depends on its context, the cultural or religious belief, and the background knowledge of the situation in which the utterance is made; however, the way of conceptualizing in different ages and cultures seems to be similar or the same in some aspects. Religious symbolism such as cup, cross, etc., which is a special case of metonymy, is found.
