According to Origen, the common priesthood consists of Bible study and moral life. He believes that God directs and helps the faithful to fulfill their priesthood. Sometimes, this kind of spiritual perspective of Origen causes the divergent approach that is far from the original context, through the allegory method. Usually, the eschatological passage of the Bible narrates how it completes the providence of God in the end, and has functions to describe the events of the parousia. Instead, Origen sees it with an absolutely different orientation. Explaining “the sound of the trumpet of angels”, which appeared in the fourth chapter of the first Thessalonians, as the sign of war, he connects it with the realization of the common priesthood. Unfortunately, since “the Commentary to the First Thessalonians” is only partially handed down, it is difficult to understand the outline of Origen's thought. Thank goodness an indication in the commentary, which says “let us read in the book of Numbers”, offers the key point of the interpretation. Through some passages from “Homilies on the Numbers”, “Homilies on Jeremiah” and “Homilies on Joshua”, which are relevant to the commentary, we can guess the reason why Origen could interpret “the eschatological sound of the trumpet of angels” as an allegory of divine providence in favor of the common priesthood.
