The primary aim of this article is to explore the macro-structures of the five Korean-English dictionaries, published between the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, analyzing the principle of the selection and arrangement of headwords in terms of the underlying reason of dictionary compilation, the expected volume, the intended audience, and the historical background. First, I investigate the purpose, the anticipated volume and users of each dictionary by examining its format, particularly, the preface, the type of body, explanatory notes and appendices. Second, I compare each dictionary in terms of its criteria for collecting headwords by classifying them according to a linguistic unit, word type. Third, I discuss how each dictionary arranges the list of headwords by looking into the order of the headwords, and the arrangement of polysemous words and homonyms.
