본 연구는 서양의 지식이 한자와 한자어에 미친 영향을 조사하고 동아시아의 나라들이 이를 어떻게 자국어로 만들려 했는지, 그리고 어느 곳에서 실패하여 타국의 번역어에 복속되었는지를 분석한다. 과거 한자와 한자어가 동아시아의 공통문자였으며 ‘공통적 감각’으로 기능했던 시기가 있었음은 분명한 사실이다. 하지만 각 나랏말 자체의 변화와 서양 지식의 유입으로 인해 ‘공통적 감각’은 빠르게해체되었다. 서양 지식을 한자어로 번역해 내는 것은 단순히 외국어를 한자어로바꾸는 것 이상을 의미했다. 어느 한 나라가 한자어 번역을 선점함으로써 한자어 세계 안에서의 패권을 쥐게 되었고, 따라서 전통적인 의미에서의 공용어(Lingua Franca)는 오늘날 더 이상 기능하지 않게 되었다는 것이 본 연구에서 논의하고자 하는 바이다. 이와 같은 논의를 위해 이 연구는 장 라플랑슈(Jean Laplanche)와 장 베르트랑 퐁탈리스(Jean-Bertrand Pontalis)의 『정신분석 사전 Vocabulaire de la psychanalyse』의 한국어, 중국어, 일본어 번역을 비교한다. 정신분석학의 언어들을 동아시아에 가지고 온 것은 일본이었으며, 따라서 동아시아의 정신분석학 용어들은 일본의 번역어를 따르게 되었다. 하지만 『정신분석 사전』에서는 각 나랏말 사이의 유사성은 물론이고 상당한 차이도 발견되는데, 본 연구는 그 이유를 더듬어 감과 함께 오늘날에 미치는 영향에 대해서도 논하고자 한다.
This study examines the influence of Western knowledge on Chinese characters (漢字) and words written in Chinese character (漢字語), which are shared by Korea, China and Japan. It is clear that Chinese characters and words written in Chinese character have been the common in East Asian language, and were served as a ‘common sense’. However, the ’common sense’ quickly disintegrated due to the change in each languages itself and the influx of Western knowledge. Translating Western knowledge into East Asian languages meant more than simply changing a foreign language into Chinese characters. It is to be discussed in this study that a country has assumed hegemony in the East Asian cultural sphere (Sinosphere) by preoccupying the translation with Chinese characters, thus the Chinese charaters as lingua franca in the traditional sense is no longer valid today. For the discussions, the study compares Korean, Chinese and Japanese translations of Vocabulariare de la psychanalyse by Jean Laplanche and Jean-Bertrand Pontalis. It was Japan that brought the languages of psychoanalysis to East Asia in the form of Chinese characters, so there was any other way not to follow Japanese translations to the other East Asian countries, even though Chinese characters were made in ancient China. However, the translations of Vocabulariare de la psychanalyse reveals the significant differences as well as similarities between each country’s words. In this sense, this study will discuss the reason of the change and its impact on today’s East Asian languages.
