이 연구는 미국의 도서관과 초등학교에서 운영하고 있는 동물매개 독서 프로그램의 의의와 한계를 고찰하여 한국의 독서교육 상황에 적용 가능성과 시사점을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이에 동물매개 독서교육의 의미와 현황을 알아보고, ‘개에게 책 읽어주기’ 프로그램에 대한 연구 성과와 프로그램의 운영 실태, 운영 절차 등을 다각적으로 검토하여 그 의의와 한계를 고찰하였다. 그리고 한국의 실정을 고려한 프로그램의 적용 방안을 모색하고 독서교육에 시사하는 바를 논의하였다.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the significance and limitations of animal-assisted reading programs operated by libraries and elementary schools in the United States, and to explore the applicability and implications of the reading situation in Korea. In this regard, the meaning and current status of animal-assisted reading education were examined, and the research results, the operation status of the program, and the operating procedures for the ‘Reading to Dog’ program were reviewed in various ways to examine their significance and limitations. And I sought ways to apply the program in consideration of the situation in Korea and discussed the implications for reading education.
