본 논문은 학계와 미디어에서 지방대생의 생생한 목소리를 대변한다고 인정되는 최종렬의 “복학왕의 사회학”을 비판적으로 검토함으로써 그의 논문이 드러내 지방대 혐오와 차별적 시선의 정체를 규명하려는 목적을 갖는다. 이를 위해 일차적으로 텍스트 분석을 통해 그의 서사분석의 타당성을 검토하였고, 또한 그것을 지방대생에 관한 선행연구 결과와 대조하였다. 이를 통해 그가 지방대생의 핵심적 특징으로 거론한 세 가지 개념인 가족주의, 경쟁을 기피하는 태도, 그리고 적당주의 습속이 인터뷰 자료를 오독하거나, 전체 청년세대에서 보이는 현상을 지방대생에게서만 발견되는 현상으로 왜곡함으로써 도출된 개념임을 확인하였다. 그의 논문은 지방대생의 부정적 습속을 설명함에 있어외적 환경과 맥락적 요소는 무시한 채 지방대생의 내재적 속성으로만 설명함으로써 네이버 웹툰 『복학왕』에서 발견되는 유사한 혐오･차별적 태도를 보여준다. 지방대생에 대한 논의를 할 경우에 그가 주장한 개념들은 신중하게 사용될 필요가 있다.
This paper aims to critically examine Jongryul Choi’s Sociology of Bokagwang, which has a reputation as representing the vivid voices of university students in non-Seoul area. The paper mainly uses text analysis of Choi’s thesis to review the validity of his thesis, comparing it with prior researches on the same topic. The result shows what he mentioned as the core characteristics of the university students were mainly derived from misreading his interview materials. His paper reads as an academic version of the famous webtoon Bokagwang in showing discriminative attitude and hate speech toward the university students in the suburban area. Therefore, his concept should be carefully used in dealing with aforementioned students.
