중국의 영화 산업은 소프트 파워의 강화를 목적으로 하는 중국 정부의 적극적인 지원 하에 최근 괄목할만한 성장을 보이고 있다. 이에 최근에 제작되는 할리우드 블록버스터 영화 대부분은 중국 시장을 염두에 두고 만들어지고 있으며, 그 결과 영화 속에 등장하는 중국적인 요소가 눈에 띄게 증가하였다. 하지만, 이러한 현상에 대한 논의가 할리우드 영화에 대한 중국의 영향력 확대와 양적 증가에만 집중되어 정작 ‘중국 코드’가 오랫동안 미국 중심의 보수적 이데올로기가 작동해 왔던 할리우드 블록버스터 시스템 안에서 어떻게 의미화 되고 있는지에 대한 분석은 거의 이루어지지 않고 있다. 이에 본고는 중국의 다국적 기업 완다그룹에게 인수된 미국의 레전더리 영화사가 2016년에 제작한 중미합작영화 「그레이트 월」의 분석을 통해 ‘중국 코드’가 할리우드 블록버스터 영화 속에서 탈국적화와 아시아계로의 인종화 과정을 통해 어떻게 의미화되는지 살펴보고, 그 과정 속에서 드러나는 할리우드의 영화의 특징 및 한계를 짚어보려고 한다. 이는 중국의 성장을 기존의 질서를 위협하는 요인으로만 바라보는 미국적인 시각에서 벗어나 중국의 진출과 함께 드러난 할리우드 영화 시스템이 가지는 문화 제국주의적 특징을 환기시키는 계기가 될 것이다.
For the last decades, the Chinese film industry has rapidly grown based on the active support from Chinese government and the Chinese factors in recent Hollywood films have increased accordingly. However, research on the increasing influence of China on Hollywood films has predominantly focused on China’s economic expansion and interference with the content of Hollywood films, and hardly discussed how these Chinese factors are represented within the conservative discourses of Hollywood films through the process of de-nationalization and racialization as Asians. For this purpose, this paper critically examines The Great Wall, a film co-produced by Hollywood and China after Legendary Pictures of Hollywood was acquired by Wanda Corp., one of the Chinese multinational companies. This study is expected to contribute to developing more critical views on the role of Hollywood films in maintaining the cultural hegemony of the global capitalists.
