본 연구는 칠레 내 한류 및 K-pop 팬들의 활동을 통하여 칠레 한류 팬덤의 특성을 분석하고, 이를 통하여 한류 팬덤의 보편성과 특수성을 탐색한다. 이를 위하여 칠레 내 주요 팬클럽 운영자들을 대상으로 포커스 그룹 인터뷰와 장기간 현장 참여를 시행해 현지의 목소리와 생각을 담아냈다. 주요 연구결과로 칠레 한류 팬덤의 특성을 따라하기, 함께하기 그리고 따로하기 세 가지의 전략으로 설명했다. 먼저, 칠레 한류 팬덤의 따라하기는 한류가 전지구화되는 맥락에서 한국 팬덤의 활동 방식을 적극적으로 차용하는 방식으로 나타난다. 함께하기는 지리적 한계를 극복하기 위해 다양한 K-pop 팬클럽이 함께 즐기는 멀티팬덤으로, 그리고 따로하기는 스페인어를 매개로 구성되는 라틴 팬덤으로 구체화된다. 칠레 한류 팬덤의 세 가지 전략은 다양한 지역의 한류 팬들 사이에 반복적으로 공유되는 보편성과, 지리적으로 멀고 문화적으로 낯선 칠레에서 재맥락화되는 한류 팬덤의 특수성을 동시에 보여준다. 궁극적으로 칠레 한류 팬덤은 서구 중심의 대중문화 질서를 넘어서서, 글로벌 대중문화로서 ‘K-팬덤’의 가능성과 비서구 사회 간의 문화 교류의 가능성을 상징적으로 보여준다.
This study explores fans of the Korean Wave and K-pop in Chile with focusing on their fandom and fan club activities. By highlighting universality and singularity of Chilean Korean Wave fandom, it suggests “K-fandom” as another stream of global pop cultures. Based on focus-group interviews and participatory of observation of Chilean fans, it explain three major strategies of Chilean K-fandom, which include adaption, collaboration and separation. Adaption strategy refers to Chilean fans’ active adaptation and even appropriation of Korean fans and their fan clubs. Collaboration strategy is manifested as a form of multi-fandom in which Chilean fans follow several K-pop idols together, and separation strategy contributes to comprising a greater Latin fandom, mediated by Spanish. Through three strategies, these Chilean fans and fan-clubs not only follow Korean fans’ activities, but also create their own modes of fandom. Ultimately, this study argues that Chilean Korean Wave fandom exemplifies a possibility of K-fandom not only as another global pop culture but also as a tool for overcoming global hierarchy in U.S dominated pop culture arena.
