This study is purposed to present the basic materials for Chinese Korean learners to understand the various meanings and functions of ‘geu-lae’ in an effective way. ‘Geu-lae’ can be interpreted in different ways depending on the exact circumstance of speech, which makes it difficult for many Chinese learners to gain understanding of ‘geu-lae’ and makes them prone to errors in the absence of intuition about Korean. In order to address this problem, a variety of different functions performed by ‘geu-lae’ are researched in this study for Chinese Korean learners. First of all, this study examines the Chinese expressions substituted for the function of Korean ‘geu-lae’ and indicates the meanings and functions of ‘geu-lae’ for Chinese learners. Then, this study investigates the Chinese expressions which are equivalent to the functions of ‘geu-lae’using the parallel corpus. Besides, this study analyzes the Korean text books that are commonly used in Korean classrooms across China, which confirms that the meanings and functions of ‘geu-lae’ used in spoken language are not presented in different ways in Korean textbooks. This study focuses on such teaching and learning methods as presenting contexts of discourse, comparing similar speech differences, and using Chinese-speaking expressions when learning ‘geu-lae’, for the purpose of enabling Chinese learners to have more familiarity with the meanings and functions of ‘geu-lae’.
