The purpose of this study is to examine the combinatory aspects and semantic characters of ‘sipta’ phrases which is followed by sentential ending. ‘sipta’ is combined with various forms such as final ending, conjunctive ending, adverb, interjection, etc. As a result of the corpus analysis, the final ending was the highest rate among these types, and it was 90%. In particular, ‘-ta’, ‘-eunga’, ‘-na’, and ‘-eulkka’ were more frequent than 100 times. The combined forms of the conjunctive ending and ‘sipta’ is the only form of ‘-eosseumyeon’, and it functioned as a final ending. The meaning of the ‘sipta’ phrases could be categorized into internal thought description(declarative/interrogative), speculation, mirativity, willingness, regret, alert, desire, and expectation. The ‘sipta’ phrases is used to convey the internal thought of the speakers to the listener. In texts with an authorial commentary such as a fiction or a stage directions of a script, it is mainly used to describe the character’s thinking. The phrase ‘-ta sipta’ functions to convey the speaker’s thoughts in euphemism. This study is meaningful in that it analyzes which precedent forms are combined with ‘sipta’, and examines the semantic and pragmatic characters of the ‘sipta’ phrases.
