이 논문에서는 앤디 클라크(Andy Clark)의 ‘확장된 마음(The Extended Mind)’ 개념에 착안하여 김초엽 소설 두 편을 분석하였다. ‘확장된 마음’ 이론은 인간이 도구와 외부 환경으로 연결된 자아를 가지고 있으며, 인간의 마음은 부분적으로 두뇌 바깥의 신체나 그 활동, 신체 바깥의 도구에 의해 구성된다는 내용이다. 또한 인간을 다른 종과 구분시켜주는 차이는 도구나 기술적 환경을 우리의 존재와 통합하는 능력이고, 디지털 기술이 발달하기 전부터 이미 인간 자체가 도구와 긴밀히 연관된 ‘타고난 사이보그’라고 주장한다. 김초엽의 SF(Science Fiction)는 과학 기술의 발달로 인해 생기는 정치적･사회적･윤리적 문제, 즉 정상과 비정상성의 기준, 약자와 소수자 인식, 젠더 불평등과 차별, 타자성과 환대의 가능성, 소외와 결핍, 경제 만능주의 등의 주제를 다룬다. 특히 김초엽 소설에 나타난 인간-기술의 연합이 구성되는 양상과 또 그것이 어긋나고 실패하는 면모를 주목하였다. 김초엽 소설은 사이보그, 인체 변형 및 개조, 우주여행, 인공지능, 가상현실, 감성공학 등 새로운 기술의 혁신적인 발전이 인간 마음의 확장을 ‘올바르게’ 담보할 수 있는 가능성 여부를 보여주기 때문이다. 〈나의 우주 영웅에 관하여〉를 통해 올바른 사이보그 되기의 가능성과 ‘확장된 마음’의 역학관계를 살펴보고, 〈빛의 속도로 갈 수 없다면〉에서는 기술 효율주의에 의해 오히려 축소･제한되는 인간 몸과 마음의 양상을 확인하였다. 궁극적으로 첨단 과학기술로 도달한 인간-기술의 연합이 진정으로 더 좋은 세상을 열 것인지, 과학기술이 누군가를 배제하는 것이 아니라 인간과 인간, 인간과 기계가 더불어 사는 법을 열어줄 수 있을지를 숙고해 보았다.
This paper analyzed the two Kim Cho-yup novels, based on Andy Clark's ‘The Extended Mind’ theory. The ‘Extended Mind’ theory states that humans have an ego connected by tools and an external environment, and that the human mind is constructed in part by the body outside the brain, its activities, and the tools outside the body. It also argues that the difference that distinguishes humans from other species is the ability to integrate tools and technological environments with our existence, and that even before digital technology developed, humans themselves are already a ‘natural born cyborgs’ closely related to tools. Kim Cho-yup's SF(science fiction) deals with such topics as political, social and ethical problems arising from the development of science and technology: the standard of normal and abnormality, the perception of the weak and minority, the inequality and discrimination of the gender, the possibility of typography and hospitality, alienation and deficiency, economic terrestrialism. This paper, in particular, noted the aspect of the ‘human-technology union’ in Kim Cho-yup's novel, and the way it went against and failed. While this novels deal with new technologies such as cyborg, human transformation and modification, space travel, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and emotional engineering, novels show that innovative advances in technology do not ‘correctly’ guarantee the expansion of the human mind. Therefore, this paper pondered whether the ‘human-technology union’ reached with advanced technology would truly open a better world, or whether science and technology would open up the way humans, humans, and machines live together, rather than excluding anyone.
