본 논문은 레오 스트라우스의 플라톤 해석을 스트라우스 정치철학의 두 테마와 관련하여 검토하였다. 첫 번째 테마는 스트라우스의 자유주의 비판과 근대성 비판 그리고 플라톤으로의 회귀라는 주제다. 두 번째는 스트라우스가 서양문명 전체를 관통하는 것으로 파악하고 있는 이성과 계시의 갈등이라는 주제다. 첫 번째 테마와 관련하여 논문은 스트라우스의 플라톤주의가 방법론적으로 비전적(esoteric)/대중적(exoteric) 읽기를 시도하고 있으며, 그 근거가 정치와 철학의 불가피한 갈등에 있음을 밝혔다. 두 번째 테마와 관련하여, 논문은 스트라우스의 플라톤주의가 중세 이슬람철학의 문제의식을 공유하고 있으며, 그 기저에는 "신학정치적 문제"가 깔려 있음을 지적하였다. 이어서 논문은 스트라우스의 플라톤주의는 플라톤 정치철학을 보다 일관성 있게 해석할 수 있는 근거를 제공하며, 아울러 스트라우스 정치철학을 재평가할 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있음을 주장하였다. 스트라우스 정치철학이 오랫동안 편견과 선입견의 희생양이 되어 왔을 뿐 아니라, 그의 플라톤주의 역시 대체로 무시되어 온 상황을 감안할 때, 본 논문은 스트라우스의 플라톤주의를 편견없이 소개하고, 플라톤 정치철학 해석의 새로운 장을 열었다는 의의를 갖는다. 이러한 작업은 또한 정치철학의 본질을 재고할 기회를 제공하는 것이기도 하다.
This paper examines Leo Strauss's Platonism by associating the two themes of his political philosophy. The first theme consists of the critic of liberalism and modernity, followed by the claim to the return to Plato. The second theme is related to the issue of the conflict between reason and revelation, which allegedly run through the entire history of western civilization. In the association of the first theme, the paper shows that Strauss's Platonism adapts esoteric and exoteric reading simultaneously and that this reading is based on the inevitable conflict between politics and philosophy. In the association of the second theme, the paper shows that Strauss's Platonism stands via medieval Islamic philosophy and that his motivation is to solve the "theologico-political problem". Next, the paper examines the distinguishing characteristics of Strauss's reading of Plato, such as his unique reading methodology, the probability issue of ideal state, and the special treatment of the theory of form. This paper concludes that Strauss's Platonism is understood correctly only by relating it to the broader theme of his political philosophy and that this interpretation contributes to correcting biased understanding of Strauss's political philosophy and, at the same time, to reminding true meaning of political philosophy.
