This study aims to examine the relationship between different types of early-youth social exclusion and depression in South Korea, by using the fuzzy set theory. For this purpose, three research questions were set surrounding South Korean early-youths. First, what level of depression and multidimensional social exclusion is seen? Second, what is the impact of the level of social exclusion types on the level of depression? Third, what difference does gender make on the impact of social exclusion types on the level of depression? To examine these research questions, the data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018) was utilized, with 2,590 samples from first-year middle school students. The level of early-youth social exclusion was measured in five dimensions. Eleven indicators were selected from a thorough literature review and from the advice of three youth welfare experts. For the analysis, simple descriptive statistics, a t-test, a correlation analysis, and a multiple regression analysis were conducted. Since the assumption of normality was not fulfilled during the multiple regression analysis, the results from the M estimation and the LS estimation were compared to achieve more accurate regression coefficient. The results of the study are summarized as follow. First, economic social exclusion and home-based social exclusion are the most severe types of social exclusion seen in South Korean early-youths. Second, male youths suffer from a higher level of peer-based social exclusion, while female youths are afflicted with a higher level of health- and school-based social exclusion. Third, the highest significant correlation coefficient was between heath- and home- based social exclusion. Fourth, the impact of economic social exclusion on depression was not significant. Fifth, the highest level of the regression coefficient was seen in the impact of heath-based social exclusion, especially for male youths. Finally, the impact of school-based social exclusion was higher for female youths. Results from this study drew both practical and political implications on social exclusion and depression of South Korean youths.
