박동실이 좌익 노선을 견지했음에도 불구하고 『열사가』는 당시 좌익의 노선과는 다르다는 점을 주목하여 그 이유를 해방공간에서의 박동실의 활동의 부침과 관련하여 분석하였다. 해방 직후부터 월북하기까지의 박동실의 활동을 네 기간으로 나뉜다. 첫째 기간(1945. 8. ~ 1946. 8.)에는 조선고전음악연구회(朝鮮古典音樂硏究會)를 중심으로 좌익 노선과 연계된 작품 활동을 활발히 하였다. 둘째 기간은 자료 공백기(1946. 9. ~ 1947. 7.)인데 좌익에 대한 미군정의 억압으로 활동을 중단한 때문으로 추정된다. 셋째 기간(1947. 8 ~ 1950. 6)에는 주로 국극협단(國劇協團)에서 통속적인 창극 활동을 하였다. 넷째 기간(1950. 7. ~ 1950. 9.)은 서울에서 인민군 환영 및 위문 활동을 하였다. 박동실이 『열사가』 중 <윤봉길열사가>와 <유관순열사가>에서 3‧1운동, 상해임시정부, 김구 등을 서술하고 형상화한 것은 해방공간의 좌익이 3‧1운동, 상해임시정부, 김구 등을 인식하고 평가하는 것과는 큰 차이를 보인다. 이는 해방 후 좌익 계열에서 열심히 활동하고, 한국전쟁이 나자 자진해서 북측에 가담한 박동실의 노선에도 어긋나는 것이다. 이러한 현상이 일어나게 된 것은 박동실이 좌익 활동이 점점 불가능해지는 시기에 국악계로 복귀하면서 자신의 정치적 노선을 잠복시킨 결과로 보인다. 『열사가』의 탈(脫) 좌익적 시각은 국극협단 중심의 통속적 창극 공연과도 상통한다. 이 점에서 『열사가』는 1948년이나 1949년에 창작되었을 가능성이 높다. 즉 좌파적 관점에서 3‧1운동, 상해임시정부, 김구 등을 그릴 수 없는 시기의 작품인 것이다. 이러한 추정은 『열사가』의 원천 자료, 특히 3‧1운동, 상해임시정부, 김구 등이 등장하는 <윤봉길열사가>와 <유관순열사가>의 원천 자료들이 1947년 후반기와 1948년 전반기에 나온 것으로도 뒷받침되며, 해방공간에서 이준, 안중근, 윤봉길, 그리고 유관순의 기념사업을 추진한 실질적 주체가 우익 진영이었다는 것으로도 뒷받침된다.
The “Yeolssa-ga” songs, which were created for martyrs who fought against Japanese invasion upon Korea in early 20th century, is a representative work of modern Pansori. It’s author Dong-sil Park(1897~1968) was a leftist. He went to North Korea during Korean War. But in the “Yeolssa-ga” songs, Dong-sil Park did not describe the March 1st Independence Movement, the Korean Provisional Government in Shanghai, and Koo Kim along the leftist line which depreciated these things and person. This discordance between the “Yeolssa-ga” songs and leftist line was caused by U.S.A Military Government Office which oppressed leftists after 1946. From August 1947 to June 1950, Dong-sil Park disguised himself under the U.S.A Military Government Office and the Republic of KOREA. He described the heroes and heroine of the “Yeolssa-ga” songs as the incarnations of nationalism and patriotism which were propagandized by the rightists. So it can be said that the “Yeolssa-ga” songs were created in 1948, and 1949.
